"Sawtooth Demon King Crocodile!"
Chen Zixuan's pale blue pupils dilated slightly. All of a sudden, this name flashed through his mind.
Enormous, ruthless, even capable of attacking its own kind—only this D-rank world boss could match all the imagined criteria he'd pieced together earlier, the one capable of forcing an entire tribe of Sawtooth Crocodiles into that canyon they'd discovered before.
No wonder that after such a long time, not a single player had found any trace of the Sawtooth Demon King Crocodile. It turned out everyone had been searching in the wrong place right from the start.
Realizing this, Chen Zixuan's spirits soared. By this logic, the Sawtooth Demon King Crocodile, like other world-class bosses, should act alone.
If it came down to a one-on-one, Chen Zixuan believed he wasn't inferior to anyone, not even facing a D-rank world boss. Even if he couldn't win, with the speed of the Sawtooth Crocodile, escaping with his life shouldn't be too difficult.
Besides, now he had the Darkwing Demon Bat as a biological radar, able to detect all living beings within a kilometer radius. The Mutant Jungle wasn't all that large. After a few tries, he was bound to uncover the boss's real hiding place.
It was worth a try!
With that thought, Chen Zixuan grew even more excited.
Perhaps it was just human nature—the urge to conquer. Hunting such gigantic monsters with nothing but cold weapons, without any firearms, always made one's blood surge with an odd kind of excitement.
Gu Yanxi, standing beside him, sensed something was off, tilting her head in confusion and asking, "What's up?"
"It's nothing, just suddenly had an idea I want to test."
With that, Chen Zixuan opened the pet interface.
After a few operations, a pair of massive bat wings unfurled. A giant, jet-black bat appeared out of thin air beside the silver-haired girl, its vampiric fangs baring from its mouth and its blood-red eyes filled with savagery.
The sudden appearance of such a creature really startled Gu Yanxi.
It took a few seconds before she regained her composure. She looked at Chen Zixuan pitifully, asking with a trembling voice, "W-what is... that?"
"My pet. Haven't you petted it before?"
The corners of the silver-haired girl's lips curved ever so slightly. She scratched the giant black bat's forehead, feeling a subtle goodwill emanating from it as she softly explained.
"H-have I...? Oh, I remember now!"
After mulling it over for a moment, Gu Yanxi finally recalled that at the time of the monster siege, Cecilia had indeed summoned a small, palm-sized bat, likely for scouting.
But when she compared the cute little bat from back then with the current monster almost as big as a person, Gu Yanxi's mind threatened to collapse on the spot.
It had only been a few days—how could the difference be this huge!
The thought that she had even touched this thing before sent a fresh wave of chills through Gu Yanxi.
Would this creature really not eat people?
While she was still letting her imagination run wild, on the other side, the silver-haired girl's originally sapphire blue left eye transformed into a strange, deep crimson—sharing her vision with the Darkwing Demon Bat and establishing an invisible connection.
Chen Zixuan's plan was to have the Darkwing Demon Bat circle above the Mutant Jungle once, to see if it could spot traces of the Sawtooth Demon King Crocodile. If that didn't work, he'd activate the bat radar to finally pinpoint the boss's exact location.
"Go."
The silver-haired girl extended a finger towards the Mutant Jungle. Instantly, the Darkwing Demon Bat flapped its powerful wings and soared straight ahead through the sky like a goose flying south.
Because bats had poor eyesight and the Mutant Jungle's vegetation was especially thick, searching for a solitary crocodile so well-camouflaged in these conditions required a huge amount of concentration and total commitment.
Thus, Chen Zixuan turned to Gu Yanxi and said earnestly, "I might have to focus all my attention over there soon. If anything happens nearby, please wake me up."
Sensing the seriousness in Chen Zixuan's tone, Gu Yanxi paused for a moment before nodding vigorously.
From time immemorial, red and blue make a CP; with one eye red and the other blue, Cecilia might not be all that symmetrical, but she had an unspoken kind of coolness.
After explaining everything clearly, the silver-haired girl bent her knees and sat cross-legged on the ground, gently closing her eyes. Within seconds, she was as still as a statue, showing no more movement.
Though she looked asleep, in reality, Chen Zixuan was truly asleep.
Previously, when controlling the Darkwing Demon Bat, Chen Zixuan had always allocated only half his perception to it, leaving the other half in his own body.
This time was the first time he tried putting all his awareness into the body of the Darkwing Demon Bat—which left his original body, now uncontrolled, to naturally fall into dormancy.
If Gu Yanxi were a little braver, and peeled open Cecilia's eyelids right now, she'd be shocked to find that the silver-haired girl's eyes had both turned the same blood-red color as the Darkwing Demon Bat's, exuding a sense of cruelty and ferocity.
However, Gu Yanxi was simply standing on guard, looking around cautiously and dutifully performing the security task Chen Zixuan had given her.
Women and children can make mistakes, but security guards cannot.
Elsewhere, several hundred meters above in the sky, for the first time, Chen Zixuan savored the sensation of flying.
The wind howled in his ears, the endless jungle racing underneath him. If it weren't for the exhausting effort of constantly flapping his wings, this would have been a wonderful experience.
As he flew, a strange illusion suddenly welled up within Chen Zixuan, as if he'd soared like this at some point in the past.
It was a pitch-black night, and he was flying nearly a kilometer high. Beneath him sprawled a glowing, gray city brimming with otherworldly flair.
Was it just a dream? Even he wasn't sure.
He shook his head firmly, tossing all those jumbled thoughts aside. Now was not the time to let his mind wander.
Forcing himself to focus, Chen Zixuan dipped slightly in altitude, casting his gaze towards the jungle below, searching for a sign—any sign—of the Sawtooth Demon King Crocodile's figure or trail.
Since its name contained "Demon King",
Chen Zixuan deduced that this boss must be exceptionally massive.
A normal Sawtooth Crocodile was already six to seven meters long. Even the largest crocodile in the real world—the saltwater crocodile—was only about that size.
So just how enormous was this monster supposed to be? Ten meters? Twenty?
Chen Zixuan had never seen a D-rank world boss before, so he didn't know.
Two minutes later, Chen Zixuan had flown all the way to the far edge of the Mutant Jungle, but still came up empty-handed.
The forest was simply too dense, and the deeper he went, the more the plants seemed to abandon reason, twisting and growing in all sorts of bizarre directions. From above, there was nothing but an endless expanse of green.
Unwilling to give up, Chen Zixuan changed direction and began circling lower over the jungle, this time flying almost flush with the treetops, scanning his surroundings as he went.
It was dangerous—he might crash if he lost focus—but without using the bat radar for now, he had no better option.
