Chapter 63 : The First Test Subject
Shen Xiaoyu was placed on a soft bed, her wounds already redressed, with clean gauze wrapped layer upon layer around her body.
Su Huan walked over and sat in the chair beside the bed, wearily rubbing her temples.
"System, are you still there?" she murmured softly. "That day at the hospital, I heard you talking to me. But I didn't hear it clearly, and you haven't appeared since then."
Afterward, she had thought about it extensively but still couldn't analyze what the system had said so unclearly.
"I don't know if you can hear me speaking. It's been two days since the car accident, and Xiaoyu still hasn't woken up. The doctors say her brain wasn't damaged, but they can't explain why she won't wake up. Is it because of the car accident or because of that other system?"
Unfortunately, no one could answer her questions.
With Shen Xiaoyu in a coma, she couldn't hear the system's voice either.
She held her forehead, licked her dry lips, and sighed helplessly. "Forget it."
At the latest, she would get answers tomorrow... right?
That night, the research institute from Yancheng returned with equipment and immediately began arranging the first attempt at the experimental procedure.
Su Huan stood nearby the entire time, arms crossed, eyes fixed intently on their movements.
Before they attached those wires to the uninjured parts of Shen Xiaoyu's body, Su Huan asked: "Are you certain this will succeed?"
The researcher looked troubled. "Boss, this is just a new discovery based on previous data. We can't be certain it will succeed either. But if we don't try, we'll never succeed."
Su Huan pressed her lips tightly, her face gloomy, brow furrowed, her heart rising and falling like a small boat in turbulent waves.
"Will there be danger?"
"No." The researcher immediately said. "The data collection target was Miss Tang. You ordered us not to harm the child in Miss Tang's belly, so we used methods with minimal harm to the human body. Based on this, we'll further reduce the equipment's output levels—the harm to Miss Shen will be virtually zero."
"Virtually zero?" Su Huan caught the key words. "So there is still some harm to Xiaoyu's body!"
"Uh..." The researcher's expression was hard to describe. "Boss, this harm to Miss Shen would be like getting bitten by a mosquito. If the system is also willing to communicate with us, the duration of this pain wouldn't even last a second! For Miss Shen, it's completely negligible."
They knew Miss Shen's importance to their boss, so naturally when researching, they had considered that the research results would be used on Miss Shen—they were extremely careful.
To reassure Su Huan, they even demonstrated for her, though without a test subject, they couldn't see the final effects.
Su Huan looked at the equipment that had started running. She couldn't understand what the values on the screen represented, but watching the jumping numbers, she remained silent for a moment.
Suddenly, she pulled over a chair, placed it beside the bed, and after sitting down, said: "I'll be the test subject for the first experiment."
She couldn't understand it, so she could only test it personally to ensure that what would be used on Shen Xiaoyu the next day was completely safe. Even if the harm was negligible, she didn't want to take risks.
"Boss!" The researcher's expression changed. "You don't have a system—we won't be able to see the effects!"
"I don't need to see the effects. I just don't want Shen Xiaoyu to be the first." Su Huan said flatly. "Come on, let me try your experimental effects first."
Everyone looked at each other—no one moved.
"Hurry up!" she urged. "If you don't use it on me today, then none of this equipment will appear near Shen Xiaoyu tomorrow either!"
Hearing this, the researcher's expression changed. Among those who could appear here, some were here for money, others were science fanatics who, upon learning of the system's existence, frantically sought to capture and study it to uncover the truth of this world.
If they could use the system to control this world, even death would be worth it to them!
As for who the test subject was, it didn't matter to them. They only showed Su Huan a bit more respect because she was the financial backer and because only she could bring them the two people with systems.
But this bit of respect absolutely couldn't compare to the importance of test subjects.
Almost immediately, the researchers began working, attaching electrode patches to her body one by one, especially on both sides of her temples—the red electrode patches were quite conspicuous.
"Boss, we're going to begin."
Su Huan took a deep breath and had just nodded when the instruments in front of her lit up one by one. A tingling sensation instantly spread throughout her body. The feeling wasn't painful—rather, it had an indescribable quality that made her unconsciously grip the chair's armrests tightly.
White mist somehow began permeating the room, gradually obscuring all people and objects, until—
Only white mist remained before her eyes.
She blinked hard, but still only white mist filled her vision.
She made a sound of realization. If Shen Xiaoyu were conscious, this white mist would be all she could see too.
The researchers' voices came from all directions.
"Boss, you can hear our voices, right? How do you feel? We've never used this on ordinary people before, so we don't know what effects it would have on regular people."
"Progress requires sacrifice. Being timid and hesitant only leads to falling behind."
"Almost there! Tomorrow I'll be able to see through the truth of this world!"
"Once I research the system, I'll succeed! Then I'll continue using Su Huan to capture the system, and I'll be able to dominate this world! Become the god of this world! Hahahaha—"
Hearing the latter words, Su Huan's nodding motion paused. She frowned slightly, widening her eyes to try to see their positions clearly, but she could only see white mist.
Su Huan raised her hand, waving the back of her hand near her nose in front of her eyes. She couldn't see her hand—only vaguely could she make out a shadow moving.
"Boss? What's wrong?"
Su Huan opened her mouth. The inquiry on her lips reduced to just few words: "I'm fine."
"Should we stop the experiment now?" the person asked again.
"I am the protagonist of this world! I will definitely control this world!"
"Why is the boss acting so strange? From her appearance, it's like she's seeing something. Could this thing actually work on ordinary people too?"
"What should we eat tonight? This damned place doesn't even have food delivery. The experiment can't start until tomorrow..."
"Something's odd. Those recorded notes don't belong to any of us, so how did they appear in our lab?"
Countless voices suddenly reached her, so noisy that Su Huan abruptly closed her eyes.
What was happening? What were those voices she just heard? Were they talking?
No! Something was wrong!
Su Huan thought carefully. The voices were theirs, no mistake, but they were much lower and hoarser, and somewhat muffled and unclear.
She frowned tightly and distinguished the sounds for a while before recognizing these were their... inner thoughts.
This discovery sent waves surging through Su Huan's heart.
She could hear everyone's inner thoughts? How was this possible? Was it because of the experiment? So this data wasn't just useful for Shen Xiaoyu, but for her too?
Su Huan opened her eyes and, relying on memory, looked toward the bed. She carefully distinguished those chaotic voices—everyone's was there except Shen Xiaoyu's.
Where were Shen Xiaoyu's thoughts?
Why still couldn't she hear Shen Xiaoyu's inner voice?
Su Huan remained silent for a while, confirming she still couldn't hear them, then gave up.
"That's enough," she said.
Only then did the researchers turn off the equipment.
The white mist before her eyes receded along with the tingling sensation throughout her body. She could see the researchers and equipment appear before her again, but she could still hear those chaotic voices.
Why could she still hear them?
"Boss? How do you feel? It doesn't hurt, right?" The researcher stepped forward to completely remove the electrode patches from her body, observing her expression and asking cautiously.
[We didn't fry the boss's brain, did we?]
Su Huan blinked, staring at her face... more precisely, staring at her mouth.
Now she was certain—what she heard were inner thoughts.
Under her suspicious gaze, Su Huan looked away. "I don't feel anything special. This thing doesn't work on ordinary people, right?"
The researcher nodded and agreed: "Right, it doesn't work on ordinary people."
Su Huan got up from the chair, rubbing her somewhat sore temples. "Clean up your things and go rest. We'll start the experiment tomorrow."
"Okay." After the researcher finished speaking, she and the others packed up their things and left.
Su Huan stood in the room, watching them leave before turning her gaze to Shen Xiaoyu.
She walked two steps to the bedside, bent down to kiss her forehead, and said softly: "Xiaoyu, I've tested the equipment. I'm certain it won't cause any damage to your body or cause pain. But the sensation is quite peculiar, and I discovered I can hear other people's inner thoughts. However, I can't yet confirm whether I can only hear their thoughts or everyone's."
Su Huan continued, chuckling softly.
"It's really quite miraculous. They know about the system's existence, yet what they're thinking about is dominating this world, becoming the protagonist of this world."
Protagonist!
She sighed.
"Obtaining anything requires paying a price. Whether as protagonist, supporting character, or cannon fodder. The system is controlling Tang Tang's body to marry Ning Yu. It wants to complete the final plot—we're running out of time. So please don't blame me, okay? The experiment is my last resort."
After Su Huan finished speaking, she moved her lips down to barely brush against hers. "I'll make everything end."
Only then did she straighten up, turn off all the lights in the room, and leave.
"I need to test whether I can hear Shi Qiubai's inner thoughts. There might be a pleasant surprise."
Su Huan leisurely left the room and, following her memory, found Shi Qiubai's room. Before getting close, she could hear sounds coming from inside.
Vague and indistinct, not very clear.
"Damn Su Huan! I'm definitely going to report her for kidnapping! Violating human rights laws by conducting human experiments!" Shi Qiubai cursed as she paced back and forth in the room. "Fuck! Let me out!"
She shouted loudly, but little sound escaped the room.
"Don't waste your effort. The research base uses soundproof materials throughout. Even if you shout until your throat is raw, people outside won't hear you."
Hearing the voice, Shi Qiubai spun around to see Su Huan leaning against the doorway, watching her with composure.
She seemed to be confirming something, her ears twitching slightly.
"Where is Sister? Give Sister back to me quickly!" Shi Qiubai said coldly, furiously.
[Sooner or later, I'm going to burn this place down!]
Su Huan nodded, confirming it—she could also hear Shi Qiubai's inner thoughts.
This way, things would be much easier to handle.
