Chapter 340: Resonant Skill Projection
The Grizzled Commander’s passive skill ‘Predator's Intuition’ flared to life. It wasn't a slow build of tension; it was a violent, hyper-specific sensory ping that stabbed directly into Ray's cerebral cortex. The vector and distance locked into his mind instantly.
It was coming from the exact same northwestern tree line that the silverbacks had fled from.
Within the ambient presence of his mindscape, the archetypes instantly reacted to the sensory spike.
Commander: "Contact! It's in the same northwest vector, closing in steady. Lock it down."
The Grizzled Commander barked.
Scholar: "Oh, magnificent! I wonder what anomaly we would be seeing in this high density ambient mana environment. The biological and theoretical data we could harvest from this event will be unprecedented!"
The Eccentric Scholar chimed in, adjusting his phantom spectacles as he practically vibrated with academic fervor.
Naturalist: "This is an exciting time mate! I can just imagine the sheer size of the beauties arriving! If those massive silverbacks were terrified of it, we are about to see a right proper apex predator! Let's get a good look at it!"
The Primal Naturalist added, bouncing on his heels with curiosity.
In the physical world, Svane paused mid-stroke. He saw his Lord's posture instantly harden from relaxed meditation to combat readiness. The Gold Aegis set his whetstone down, gripped his sword, and immediately pushed a heavy surge of mana into his eyes and ears. He swept the tree line below, straining his enhanced senses to their absolute limits.
He detected absolutely nothing.
Svane let out a slow, amazed breath. This was the second time today that a teenage boy had completely out-sensed him again.
"My Lord? Do you detect something?"
Svane asked quietly.
"Yes, I believe the 'big dark monsters' have arrived."
Ray confirmed, his amber eyes locked on the deep ancient woods.
Ray closed his eyes again, reaching down through the telepathic familiar bond to contact his scout on the ground.
Nox. Get ready. Incoming.
There was no response. The mental link was completely quiet, save for the faint, telepathic equivalent of loud, rhythmic snoring.
Nox, Wake up. Target is arriving!
Ray pushed a bit harder.
Still nothing. The void-malkin was dead to the world.
Frustrated, Ray stood up.
System. Initiate Concurrent Partial Immersion, layer in: The Gritty Detective.
He immediately activated the Gritty Detective’s ‘Observation’ skill. Ray's vision sharpened with supernatural clarity, cutting through the shadows and the ambient mist of the valley floor. He rapidly scanned the ruins, checking behind fallen walls and deep craters until his eyes locked onto the base of a specific pillar.
There, perfectly camouflaged in the shade, was a puddle of darkness with a bulging, slowly rising and falling belly. Nox was dead asleep on the job.
Ray sighed, shaking his head in disbelief.
There was no time to wait for the cat to wake up naturally. The threat was closing the distance rapidly, and Ray desperately needed eyes on the ground.
As he weighed his options, a memory surfaced from his time at Solhaven Academy. He recalled a specific lecture from Master Teralyn Sperro in his Arcane Zoology & Binding class.
“The bond between a mage and their familiar is not merely a leash of obedience. It is a highly conductive, two-way arcane tether. A truly skilled binder does not just share their partner's senses; they can project their own magic through the bond, utilizing the familiar as the physical point of origin for their spells. The tactical applications in combat are limitless.”
Master Sperro had explained, pacing before the chalkboard.

Ray wasn't trying to cast a fireball out of Nox's mouth, but the theoretical framework was identical. If a traditional mage could route a spell through a familiar bond to affect the physical world, Ray should theoretically be able to route an Archetype skill through the telepathic tether to affect the familiar's mind.
It was a highly experimental solution, but he had no other choice.
Ray decided to apply the General's Cadence skill. However, if he simply activated it and shouted, the aetheric shockwave would blast out into the open air, potentially giving away their position or bouncing harmlessly off the inside of the Null-Veil.
Instead, Ray drew a concentrated burst of primordial Aether up from his core and infused it directly into his vocal cords. He locked his focus entirely onto the telepathic tether linking his mind to Nox's.
Ray took a breath, treating the mental link like a closed-circuit megaphone.
"Wake up, Nox!"
Ray said.
The Aetheric shockwave didn't make a sound in the physical world. Instead, it blasted straight down the mental tether, hitting Nox's sleeping mind like a localized psychic flashbang.
Ray immediately winced, pressing two fingers to his temple. A sharp, sudden spike of cognitive strain flared in his head. Forcing dense, primordial aether through an intangible psychic connection felt incredibly strange, like a cold, heavy vibration shooting directly through the very center of his brain. It was a jarring, unnatural sensation, akin to forcing high-pressure water through a pipe that was never built to handle it.
A moment later a translucent blue screen immediately chimed in Ray's vision.
[SKILL APPLICATION DETECTED]
[EXPERIMENTAL ROUTING: TELEPATHIC CONDUIT]
[STATUS EFFECT: AETHERIC SLUMBER (LOW-TIER) CLEANSED]
[PERFORMANCE EVALUATION: INSPIRED]
[ANALYSIS: Host successfully isolated the aetheric shockwave of a physical command skill and routed it entirely through an established mental tether. This bypasses physical proximity requirements and environmental interference, effectively turning a localized area-of-effect skill into a targeted, long-range psychic transmission. Largest mastery gain.]
[General's Cadence: +10%, Aether Weaving: 15%.]
[MASTERY CAPSTONE REACHED: 'Aether Weaving' at 100%.]
[You have transcended mimicry and achieved true artistry in this skill.]
[INSPIRED RESULT: Your innovative use of mental links has forged a bridge between your Archetype abilities and your network. You have unlocked a new Innate Skill: 'Resonant Skill Projection'.]
[Trait Description: The Host can now channel specific, non-kinetic Archetype skills (such as mental cleanses, buffs, or command auras) directly through established mental tethers, including the Familiar Bond and 'Resonant Link Communication'. Cognitive strain and Aether cost scale with distance, the number of targets, and the complexity of the projected skill.]
Down in the ruins, Nox jolts awake so violently he flew three feet straight into the air.
The void-malkin let out a panicked, shrieking hiss, hitting the dirt with all four paws scrambling for traction. Every single hair of his shadowy fur was puffed out to its absolute limit, making him look twice his normal size. Nox spun around frantically, his glowing golden eyes wide with terror as he looked for his master that had just screamed directly into his brain.
That was not cool Master… I was having a glorious dream! I was eating a sunbeam! A literal sunbeam! You can't just scream inside my skull like that!
Nox shrieked in Ray’s head.
Ray ignored the tirade, his mental voice cutting through the feline panic with dead, icy seriousness.
Quiet, Nox. The target is here. Get into the deepest shadows you can find. Now.
The lethal edge in Ray's tone instantly overrode Nox's indignation. The void-malkin’s survival instincts took the wheel. He stopped hissing, flattened his ears, and melted seamlessly into the darkest patch of shade beneath a collapsed archway, becoming entirely indiscernible from the darkness just as a heavy, unnatural chill began to roll through the valley.
Up on the rocky ridge, Svane stepped closer to the edge of the Aetheric Null-Veil’s transparent dome.
"I have movement, my Lord."
Svane reported, his voice tight.
The veteran Aegis had pushed a heavy surge of mana into his eyes, squinting through the ambient mist of the Whispering Hills. He could see massive, shifting silhouettes emerging from the northwestern tree line, stepping into the ruined clearing.
"They are massive, but the mist is too thick. From this distance, I cannot positively identify them or their threat level."
Svane said as he ground his teeth in frustration.
"That is okay, I will go ahead and take a closer look."
Ray said calmly.
Sitting cross-legged on his rock, Ray sent a silent, directional ping down the mental tether. Down in the ruins, Nox received the command. Sticking purely to the intersecting shadows cast by the ancient pillars, the void-malkin flowed across the clearing like a spill of dark ink, closing the distance to the incoming targets.
Ray activated the Familiar Share Sense skill.
Ray’s left eye suddenly shifted. His human iris vanished, replaced entirely by the glowing, pupil-less gold of the void-malkin. His vision immediately split down the middle. His right eye remained focused on the dome around him, but his left eye was suddenly flooded with a ground-level, monochrome perspective of the ruins.
Through Nox's eyes, Ray watched the threat fully emerge from the tree line.
It was a pack of mutated, oversized beasts, their bodies thickened by the dense ambient aether of the region. But as Ray took in the composition of the group, a deep chill ran down his spine.
Within the Ambient Presence of his mind, the Primal Naturalist's usual feral excitement instantly evaporated, replaced by profound bewilderment.
Naturalist: "Crikey... look at that grouping mate. That makes absolutely zero biological sense. You've got a group of massive dire wolves walking shoulder-to-shoulder with a couple of towering Razor-backed boar. Behind them are another group of lean, predatory forest hounds, and flanking the rear... a troop of those heavily scarred giant silverbacks."
The Primal Naturalist muttered, his voice tense.
Ray watched closely, realizing exactly what the archetype meant.
Naturalist: "There is no infighting, predators and prey, creatures that would normally slaughter each other on sight for territorial dominance, are moving in perfect, unnatural unison. They are marching in a chilling sync. That isn't wild behavior, mate. That's a hive."
The Primal Naturalist continued, sounding genuinely unsettled.
Furthermore, through Nox's heightened senses, Ray could feel a dark, heavy aura rolling off their bodies. It was deeply unsettling, yet dangerously familiar.
