Chapter 148 : The Maid and the Duke
"Achoo~"
"Anna's sneeze is so cute~"
"Lady Sister, now isn't the time for this, is it?"
For some reason, I suddenly felt an inexplicable chill. Could it be that someone was talking about me behind my back?
Chris, Nora, and I were doing our utmost to resist the flood-like assault of adventurers, but if things continued like this, we would only end up captured. Just dealing with the close-combat warriors was already too much to handle, and we still had to guard against attacks from distant mages and archers.
The only good news was that the knights were actually being held back by everyone from Anna's Support Group. In that case, I couldn't let down everyone's efforts.
"Lady Chris, Nora, please be careful."
One of my chains burst into flames.
[Fire Whip]—one of the fire-type magics, a skill that could only be used while wielding a whip-type weapon. It made the weapon burn, with the side effect of damaging the weapon's durability.
I had never seen any signs of my chains breaking, so I assumed they could withstand this side effect. Flames swirled around the chain as it struck the edge of the ice wall at lightning speed.
The chain burning with fierce flames was like a forty-meter-long flaming sword, cutting the ice wall in half at the waist.
"Anna can use such powerful fire magic too?"
"Lady Sister, I can do that as well."
Not to be outdone, Nora leaped into the air, took a deep breath, and actually breathed out a ball of fire from her mouth, melting the falling ice blocks.
"Eh? Fire breathing?"
At most, I could only do symbolic fire-breathing as a circus performance with no real killing power. How did Nora manage to do that?
Thanks to Nora's flames, all the ice blocks were cleared away, and the ice wall was no longer an obstacle to our escape route.
I used wind magic to propel myself into the air, spread my chains widely to defend against the archers' sniping, and simultaneously extended a chain to wrap around Chris, bringing her up into the air as well.
"There are quite a few adventurers behind the ice wall too!"
"There are too many of them... a dark mass..."
The area behind the ice wall wasn't clear either. Everyone from Anna's Support Group was doing their utmost to help us hold back the knights. We had to seize the time to break through.
Should I release the restriction?
I had only one chance each day to release the restriction and boost my abilities to half the strength I'd have with a master.
The limitation was that it only lasted three minutes. Should I bet everything on those three minutes?
"Lady Sister, they're in chaos down there."
"Is there a knight disrupting their formation?"
Huh? A knight?
Under the protection of my chains, we managed a relatively smooth landing.
The adventurers lying in wait immediately rushed up, but more adventurers were urgently dealing with the sudden change from behind.
In the light of the illumination magic, I quickly caught sight of that knight's figure.
"Sir Ivanhoe?!"
I didn't speak very loudly, and this exclamation was quickly drowned in the noisy shouting. However, the knight fighting in the crowd in the distance seemed to have a telepathic connection and noticed where I was, spurring his horse to gallop toward us.
Ivanhoe had equipped his mount with horse armor, trading reduced movement speed for the warhorse's defensive capability.
I hadn't seen Ivanhoe since he had attracted the Black Eagle Mercenary Group last time. Just like before, he had found my location with perfect accuracy.
"Oh, my respected lady, what vile villain had the heart to harm you?"
"Why are you... here?"
"The Father God guides me!"
Ivanhoe replied proudly. His helmet still had several arrows stuck in it. Charging through crowds on horseback wasn't easy either.
"Who is he?"
"Lady Chris, he's the knight I mentioned to you before, Sir Ivanhoe of Smylie."
I briefly introduced Ivanhoe to Chris and Nora. With his perfectly timed support, perhaps breaking through wasn't impossible.
"Ladies, I shall cover your escape from danger."
Ivanhoe dismounted and engaged the adventurers in foot combat.
Even without the golden apple item, Ivanhoe could still use taunting skills, though the taunt range wasn't as wide as the golden apple's.
"Nora, can you keep up?"
"Wherever Lady Sister goes, I shall follow like a shadow."
"Mm-hmm, worthy of being my Nora. You can always put me at ease. Let's go, Anna!"
Chris was a count's daughter after all. Even if she hadn't been sent to a magic academy, she had received all the other education she should have, which naturally included horsemanship.
Ivanhoe temporarily transferred the mount's usage rights to us. I sat on horseback with Lily, with Chris leading the way, using a charging method to break through.
Seeing this, the adventurers immediately called down a large-scale arrow rain, and the mages likewise created obstacles like ice walls. However, the ice walls they created were far inferior to those summoned by Duke Borgia's subordinates in both width and hardness, easily shattered by the chains I struck out with.
At the same time, I spread a large number of chains into the air and reinforced them with freezing magic.
"Anna? What are you trying to do?"
"Please continue straight ahead, Lady Christiana."
I didn't freeze all the chains completely, leaving half loose. The upper half remained flexible chains, while the lower half was frozen into a solid whole.
I began rotating the chains at high speed. The chains spread out in all directions like willow catkins dancing in the wind, like a high-speed spinning and constantly advancing top, knocking away nearby adventurers and intercepting all incoming arrows.
Only after we escaped the area where adventurers had gathered did I retract the chains, but Chris suddenly reined in the horse.
Ahead of us, a figure stood squarely blocking our path.
"Duke... Borgia...?"
