Chapter 122 : Great Plague Black Death
Chris's morning was devoted to leisure, or handling some minor problems within the territory.
Since Chris wasn't the true baron of Ende in the literal sense, very few matters were assigned to her for handling as the governor below could handle things just fine.
After dressing and washing up, I followed behind Chris to the dining room.
"The adventurer who knows [Astrology] has been protected? No problem, Anna, you can all stay within the barony. This place is absolutely the safest."
"But if they learn..."
"It's fine, it's fine. The Barony of Ende has underground passages leading out."
"Really?"
I didn't quite believe it, feeling it might be a lie Chris was using to comfort me.
"Castles where great nobles reside all have secret passages. Anna, guess what they're used for?"
"Please enlighten me."
How nobles think isn't within my range of knowledge. Could there really be secret passages beneath Ende Barony's castle?
"Of course... they're escape routes to save your life when you're discovered after having an affair!"
"Uh..."
Ende Barony is Count Montefeltro's territory and vacation home after all, is it really okay to slander her own father like this?
"Just kidding, though there really are nobles who use them that way. The interior is actually fine, but territories on national borders all need secret passages for emergencies. Anna, do you remember the legendary Sun City Heliopolis?"
"I know it. The most prosperous city on Lemoria Continent a hundred years ago, renowned as the Sun City and Golden City. It produced abundant gold and was a wealthy city-state."
But that was only the record from a hundred years ago. If it had been able to continue peacefully until now, it would surely be even more prosperous.
I added: "Unfortunately, that city was targeted by undead species. They used evil power to occupy Heliopolis."
Chris continued narrating: "The leader of the undead species that conquered Heliopolis back then was the [Necromancer]. It used despicable power to spread a great plague around Heliopolis."
The [Necromancer], along with the [Vampire King] that Duke Borgia subjugated, one of the capable lieutenants under the Demon Lord. According to rumors, the Necromancer possessed a legendary weapon: the Book of the Dead. Through that forbidden tome containing all the world's dark magic and witchcraft, the Necromancer spread an unprecedented plague in Heliopolis.
"The Necromancer spread the plague at night. In just one night, the plague infected the entire city-state. What was terrifying was that the next day, after the sun rose, when sunlight shone on the bodies of people infected with the plague, they actually began to burn. In the end, their entire bodies were consumed by inextinguishable flames. The nobles of Heliopolis who realized something was wrong chose to hide in the castle, and the Church hurriedly dispatched clergy with the authority to use divine magic for reinforcement."
But everything was too late. NPCs don't have convenient communication methods like adventurer private messages. That undead species attack was obviously well-prepared, and the people hiding in the castle fell into isolated and helpless circumstances, killing each other in despair.
"When the Church's clergy arrived, Heliopolis had already been occupied by undead species. They fought fiercely with the undead, but the despair gathered in that city had reached an astonishing amount. Finally breaking through the critical point, the Necromancer detonated this despair, creating a large area of black fog that completely blocked sunlight. The Church was also forced to retreat."
Using that incident as a trigger, the undead species that had no territory and lurked in darkness finally gained a foothold on Lemoria Continent, obtaining their own stronghold.
"I see... it was to guard against the great plague?"
"Yes. At that time, the Church successfully saved a few survivors. Divine magic was effective against the great plague, but unfortunately, contact with sunlight would cause self-immolation. How many people could persist until divine magic arrived? Also, the people who were finally besieged seemed to have died from infighting due to lack of food and water, plus being in a closed environment."
Mentioning that great plague incident that shocked the entire Lemoria Continent, Chris also spoke in an extremely serious tone.
The Great Plague incident directly changed the structure of Lemoria Continent. In this world where even the nation's highest combat power couldn't easily deal with human wave tactics, the Necromancer nearly single-handedly massacred the city. Heliopolis at that time was a wealthy city with no shortage of masters skilled in magic, yet they all died under the Necromancer's great plague.
"For hundreds of years, the Necromancer hasn't launched another great plague. The principles of the magic are also completely unknown. The Church's provisional name for it is 'Black Death.' The only confirmed activation condition is that the Necromancer must approach the city and cannot cast spells from a distance. So the secret passages around the kingdom's periphery were designed to obtain supplies from cities not infected with the great plague and hold out until divine magic arrived. However, both maintenance and construction costs are not cheap, and the Great Plague happened a hundred years ago, so newly constructed castles also cut corners."
"The reason for prevention is that the Necromancer is still alive, right?"
The Necromancer who possesses the ability to create great plagues still survives in this world, equivalent to a bomb that could explode at any time.
After the Great Plague, the Necromancer quickly disappeared from sight and no longer appeared before the world. The last recorded sighting of the Necromancer was hundreds of years ago when the Church launched the first crusade against undead species. Because the undead species' black fog hadn't yet expanded to a scale that left the crusaders exhausted, the first crusade once attacked to the walls of decaying Heliopolis.
Since then, there have been no more records of Necromancer activity. People say the Necromancer dwells in Heliopolis, but that's merely speculation.
