Chapter 381 : The Eve of Departure
Chapter 381: The Eve of Departure
“Janna, is this [Flame Vine] you cultivated really immune to magma?”
During Janna’s earlier project presentation, Vivian had also learned that this seemingly ordinary crimson vine could actually survive in volcanic magma.
“In theory, yes. But I haven’t tested it in a simulated magma environment yet.”
Because the [Flame Vine] had extremely strict requirements for high-temperature growth environments, once it was removed from the power of the [Fragment of the Law of Growth], it quickly withered in normal temperatures and slumped in the flowerpot.
Seeing this, Janna immediately stored the flowerpot into her Thorn Bracelet to delay the withering of the [Flame Vine].
“The [Flame Vine] in the pot is still at its seedling stage. Once it reaches full maturity, it can grow to be over a hundred meters long and will have a significantly extended lifespan in normal temperatures. Moreover, a mature [Flame Vine] will also possess a degree of autonomous will, much like an ordinary magical beast.”
“That sounds amazing—if the issue of its growing environment could be solved, this magic plant could be an excellent ‘guardian creature.’”
By “guardian creature,” Vivian was referring to the kind of magical beast or plant that wizard families often raised in their secret chambers or restricted family zones.
Their purpose was to prevent unauthorized intrusions.
For example, in Vivian’s Rose Family, the “guardian creature” raised in their basement was a serpent-type magical beast. Normally, it would transform into a stone statue—difficult to detect and with minimal food requirements—making it a very convenient “guardian creature.”
If the [Flame Vine] could overcome its environmental limitations, then as a fire-resistant and non-feeding active magical plant, it would make an excellent “guardian creature.”
“I wonder if the White Tower’s library has any research reports on [Devil’s Vine]. If I could reference those, maybe I could further optimize the [Flame Vine].”
While Janna was still pondering ways to improve the [Flame Vine], Mary Margaret soon called Vivian’s name.
“I’m going.”
“Good luck!”
Janna silently mouthed a “good luck” to Vivian, who confidently carried a glass container covered in a black cloth to the podium.
“The title of my presentation today is: Increasing the Success Rate of Ice Attribute Sealing Spells———”
Hearing the topic, Janna, who hadn’t expected much from the often-absent Vivian, couldn’t help but widen her eyes slightly.
“Hiss—”
As Vivian unveiled the black cloth, a pure white little snake could be seen coiled inside the glass container.
“This container is inscribed with a temperature-regulating array. The current temperature is minus thirty degrees Celsius.”
With those words, an ice-blue gem appeared on Vivian’s forehead. As she continued casting, a hexagonal ice pillar rapidly formed around the white snake within the container.
“So that’s how she improves the success rate of the sealing spell.”
Watching Vivian’s continuous demonstrations, Janna’s intrigued expression gradually turned helpless.
Vivian’s project was essentially about analyzing how different temperatures affected the success rate of ice attribute sealing spells.
Her final conclusion: in low-temperature environments, the success rate could reach up to ninety-five percent, whereas in high-temperature conditions, it would drastically decrease, possibly even drop by half...
“That concludes my presentation.”
After finishing, Vivian covered the container again with the black cloth and returned to her seat amid a smattering of applause.
“Well? My project turned out alright, didn’t it?”
Seeing Vivian’s genuinely smug expression, Janna nodded in agreement.
“It was brilliant—totally unexpected.”
“Haha, I only spent two days preparing it. Didn’t expect it to work out so well.”
Listening to Vivian’s non-stop reflections, Janna could only rely on her [Muscle Control] talent to force a polite smile, so as not to bruise her friend’s ego.
The project presentations were spread across two days, with a five-minute limit for each. So by six in the evening, only half the class had presented.
“Finally done. Do those who’ve already presented have to come tomorrow too?”
“Unless there’s some exceptional reason, everyone is expected to attend.”
“So annoying. Tomorrow’s Saturday—why couldn’t they just finish everything by Friday? Oh right, aren’t you leaving tomorrow?”
Hearing Vivian’s words, Janna nodded while organizing her exam materials.
“That’s right. Professor Mage booked all our steam train tickets for 9 a.m. tomorrow.”
This Saturday was the date Janna and Lilith-Mag had agreed on to head to the Elemental Soul Wizard Gathering to participate in the “Andrew-Gantt Transfiguration Trial.”
Besides Janna, Gawen-Tull, who was also participating in the [Wizard Invention] evaluation, would be heading there too.
However, up to this point, Janna still hadn’t seen Gawen-Tull at the academy. So she assumed that, having already graduated, Gawen-Tull must have temporarily taken up lodging in one of Turin City’s taverns after completing the preliminary assessment.
Without an address, Janna had no way of contacting her even through a Messenger Summoning.
“Well, if you’re not coming, then I won’t either.”
Upon hearing that Janna was leaving tomorrow, Vivian pouted and responded a bit gloomily.
“Have you thought of an excuse? If you don’t have a good one, your attendance score could take a hit—”
“I don’t care. The project presentations are just for show anyway. Aside from you, what second-year apprentice wastes time researching all this? Worst case, I’ll have my father talk to Professor Mary.”
Janna didn’t say anything more. She silently walked with Vivian out of the Magic Tower. Once they exited, Janna gently tugged Vivian’s arm and said softly,
“We agreed yesterday that today it’s my treat. So, what do you want to eat?”
Because Janna was leaving tomorrow, Vivian’s mood had dipped a little. But hearing that Janna would be treating her, the clouds on her face cleared up instantly.
“I want to drink! The most expensive wine you’ve got!”
