288 - Slaying the Otherworld Sea Demon
Jack pulled out a single card from his stack of spellcards. It was a tarot-like card with a drawing of a lantern and a bluish moon. The [Azure Moon Field] spellcard.
He wordlessly injected his mystic energy into the card.
A pulse of cold, sapphire light erupted from Jack. It expanded rapidly. Covering the Silent Mermaid and its surrounding ocean. The water turned a deep, glowing, mystical blue color. The air grew several degree colder.
This field was designed to suppress unnatural and 'otherworld' energies. It was a direct counter to the chaotic power of the Outer Demons.
The monster shrieked. Its movements slowed. The rapid knitting of its wounds slowed to a crawl.
"Love! Get the illusion fog up." Jack immediately gave instruction. The [Azure Moon Field] wasn't enough to stop the demonic naga.
"On it, Dear!" Reina replied.
She didn't hesitate. She stood straight. Her long black hair were whipping in the wind. She raised her hands. And a thick, unnatural mist began to appear around her. Spreading out to cover the ghost ship. And even further.
It didn't just obscure vision. It twisted the light. Creating other ghostly shapes of the ship that danced in the water. Confusing the demon’s many eyes.
Meanwhile, Jack took off his [Spatial Backpack] and pulled out boxes of specialized ammunition from it.
"Bell! Moby! Everyone! Take these!" He ordered. "Holy-water infused bullets and consecrated grenades. Let's see how it fare against this."
Jack himself grabbed his own shotgun-turned-sniper-rifle and loaded a clip of silver-tipped rounds. Ones he created with runes and holy water purchased from the Prosperity Church priests back in Lonestone.
He took aim and pulled the trigger. He didn't fire at the body. He fired at the base of the demon's throat. One of the few weak point indicated by his [Eyes of Judgement].
BOOM!
The holy bullet hit. The reaction was violent. Instead of a simple wound, the point of impact erupted in white flames. The demon thrashed. Its tail slammed powerfully into the water again and again. Creating mini-tsunamis that rocked the ship.
"Now!" Jack shouted.
The other crew members, already reloading their weapons with holy projectiles, aimed their guns and shot. Bullets and grenades, coated with holy element, struck the naga demon. Causing significant damage.
"Taste these, you overgrown lizard." Jack muttered. Taking out several spellcards from his [Spatial Belt].
He began to spam his spellcards. Activating anything his [Eyes of Judgement] deemed effective on the demon.
First, the [Bleeding Curse] streak hit the demon's side. The wounds that were trying to heal suddenly burst open. Pouring black ichor that wouldn't stop.
Next was the most terrifying curse Jack had. The [Itch Curse]. It sounded trivial. But it was the ultimate spell for distraction and concentration breaking.
And it worked extremely well on the monster. The sudden, maddening irritation caused it to claw at its own scales. Ripping them off in a frenzy.
On the other side of the deck, Leon Drake, in his black armored state, dropped down his grenade launcher and had his grimoire open. The pages flipped frantically.
"Taste the lightning, Ugly Beast!" He yelled. He pointed a shaking finger at the sky. Casting the enhanced [Lightning Strike]. A bolt of jagged, blue electricity descended from the sky. Striking the demon's head.
Baroness Artheim wasn't standing idle either. She had also dropped her rifle. Opting to activate her inherent supernatural power instead. Her eyes glowed with a faint bluish hue.
She raised her hand. "Go!" She commanded.

From the air around her, three hawks made of pure, crackling white lightning appeared. They soared into the sky, circled once, and then dove. Crashing into the demon's body like planes driven by suicide pilots. Each impact was a rhythmic boom that sent tremors through the sea.
Jack didn't waste the chance.
"Now listen to this, Bastard!" He shouted as he released the [Soul Breaking Scream] spellcard next. It was a wave of psychic energy. And it struck the heavily damaged creature accurately.
The demon's many eyes rolled back into its head. Its massive body slumped for a second. Stunned by the direct assault on its corrupted spirit.
More explosive holy bullets and grenades struck its tattered body. The other crew members didn't waste the opportunity either. They reloaded and unleashed holy devastation on the demonic creature.
Jack activated his last, marked-as-effective spellcard by his [Eyes of Judgement]. The [Wind Blade]. A crescent of compressed air sliced through the air. Severing one of the demon's heavily damaged arms.
The demon, Glorious Gillbuster, was being torn apart.
The combination of the suppression field, the holy ammunition, and the concentrated magic was too much for it.
A normal creature would escape facing such kind of destruction. But this one was a demon. One whose destructive desire was much greater than its survival instinct.
It tried to retaliate. Attacking the ghost ship. But Reina's illusion fog and Argust's sea maneuver caused it to leash out to illusionary image instead of the real Silent Mermaid.
"Finish it!" Jack ordered.
He loaded his last specialized round. A holy-explosion variant. Immediately, he aimed his sniper rifle.
Adjusting the weapon's gear to its maximum power generation, Jack pulled the trigger. The kickback of the shot was extreme. Jack had to move a few steps backward to neutralize it. Despite his powerful strength and resilience.
But the bullet zoomed to the target like fast-forwarded destruction beam. It landed right inside the demon’s unhinged mouth.
KA-BOOM! An explosive sound, louder than anything they've ever heard, shook the environment. The whole ship vibrated crazily.
A blinding white light erupted from the demon's. It didn't just explode. It was blasted into nothing. The demonic head disappeared into oblivion. The remaining holy energy was incinerating the upper body of the Outer Demon race.
The massive tail gave one final, weak slap against the water. And then, it sank. The turbulent sea began to calm. The oily glow faded. Replaced by the natural, dark blue of the deep ocean.
Jack lowered his rifle. He took a deep breath. The cold air stinging his lungs. He felt the drain on his mental strain.
And... he looked at his weapon. The steamrune shotgun-turned-into-sniper-rifle was damaged. Quite seriously. The maximum power generation was still too much for it. He needed to fix it... again.
Rune turned her glow into a soft, soothing green. She hovered back to his shoulder. Her light was steady once more.
"Is it... is it over?" Mirella asked from the corner. Lowering her rifle.
"For now." Jack replied calmly.
He looked at the wreckage. There was nothing left of the Dragon Queen or its captain. Just some floating wood and the lingering smell of blood.
Reina walked over to him. She looked tired. Her fair skin seemed paler than usual. But she smiled. She reached out and hugged him.
"Well done, Dear." She whispered.
"You too, Love. Your fog held the line extremely well." Jack replied.
He looked around the deck. The crew was shaken. But they were alive, and completely uninjured. An extremely great result for a group that had to face an otherworld demon.
Baroness Artheim was leaning against the railing. Breathing hard. Her lightning hawks were, at the moment, gone.
Leon Drake had sat down on a crate. His grimoire was closed and his armor had disappeared. He was also out of breath. But otherwise... perfectly fine.
"Moby!" Jack called out.
"Aye, Captain?" Moby, nearby, replied. He looked tired mentally. But perfectly well physically.
"Check the ship." Jack instructed. "I want a full report on the damage if any. And check the force-shield generators. If they're damaged, tell me quickly."
"Right away, Captain."
Jack looked at the horizon. The night sky was dark, but he could still see the horizon line clearly. They hadn't reached the Myriad Island Archipelago yet. But, they had already been involved in this 'glorious demon' cases. He wondered what would await them in their destination.
And Jack remembered that their business with this case hadn't finished. There were still the slaves they rescued and the sealed artifacts they seized from the pirates. They were still in his Mirror Mansion.
"Reina!" Jack said. Turning to her.
"Yes, Dear?"
"I'll take you, Serene, and Autumn to the Mirror Mansion." Jack said. "Please ensure the rescued prisoners are healed and taken care of. But, make them unconscious. We're ghost ship crew members. Let's keep our identity mysterious. Once we are back to Crescent Island, we will find a safe place to drop them off."
"Understood." Reina nodded. "We'll handle that."
Jack looked back at the burning remains of the Dragon Queen. The ship vanished beneath the waves with a final, gurgling hiss. A few bubbles of oil and debris were all that remained of the pirate menace.
"Argust!" Jack called out to the internal communication system. "Set a course back to Crescent Island. We have guests to bring there."
"Understood, Captain! Setting course now!" The navigator's voice sounded normal. Calm. Rather excited and regretful even.
He didn't join the assault against the demon. He was controlling the ghost ship from the control chamber.
The Silent Mermaid turned. Its tattered sails seemed to catch a spectral wind. It glided away from the site of the slaughter. Leaving nothing but the cold, indifferent ocean behind.
