The Machine God

Chapter 212 - The Convergence of Wills, Pt. 1

Chapter 212

The Convergence of Wills, Pt. 1

The tent smelled like fresh canvas and expensive coffee.

Someone on Khalida’s staff had set up a refreshment table near the entrance, though nobody was touching it. A rolling television stand near the far corner showed the live feed of the terrace outside. Chairs filling. Cameras positioning. The countdown had ended a few minutes ago, replaced by a view of the conference with a scrolling banner that read ‘DUBAI PRESS CONFERENCE — LIVE.’

Alexander stood near the back, watching the screen with one eye and the room with the other.

Both guilds had gathered in the large marquee tent. The Throne of Scales occupied the left side. Maximilian stood at their center in his black and gold guild uniform, pressed and pristine, arms folded behind his back. Julia wore her white superhero costume with blue accents, guild jacket over it, unbuttoned. Raelene’s own advanced combat suit hummed faintly beneath her hood, visor feeding her data Alexander could sense but not read. Draven’s specialized stealth suit shifted in the light, rippling at the edges. Cash leaned against a support pole, relaxed but alert in his own guild jacket and casual dress.

Grimnir filled the right side. And if the Throne of Scales looked like they’d walked off a recruitment poster, Grimnir looked like they’d walked out of a bespoke armory.

Augustus wore a deep purple three-piece suit beneath a fitted black breastplate, bracers running from wrist to elbow, leg guards over tailored pants, and combat boots that looked too well-polished for the battlefield they were designed for. His wand was in his hand, pressed flat against the inside of his right wrist.

Alexander approved.

Talia’s dark grey suit disappeared beneath the same style of sleek black armor Alexander had built for all of them. Custom fitted. Lightweight alloys layered with thermal shielding and kinetic dampeners. Her conjured katana sat at her hip, the black cord grip bound tight.

Annie’s red jacket hung open to reveal a black t-shirt that read ‘anniescult.com/merch’ in bold white lettering. She’d refused the armor, as expected. She didn’t need it. Beneath the jacket and the shirt, everything from the neck down was phased to MetaMetal. The world just couldn’t tell at first glance.

Felix and Gilly both wore comfortable clothes beneath matching sets of the same black combat armor. Neither of them looked at ease in it. Felix kept adjusting the chest piece, and Gilly’s lower set of eyes blinked in sequence every time the shoulder plates shifted.

When it came to the two aliens, Alexander had insisted. Their presence was essential, and so the protection wasn’t optional.

Gabriel Cross sat in a folding chair near the tent’s entrance, dressed in a charcoal suit with a cream shirt beneath his own set of armor. His color had improved since those early days in the medical room, but the thinness remained. He held a cup of tea in both hands, steam curling between his fingers. His eyes were closed.

Droney hovered at Alexander’s shoulder, bubbling with its own emotional awareness of what was to come.

Alexander himself had kept it simple. Black three-piece, white shirt beneath, no tie, jacket buttoned once at the center. His gauntlet covered his right hand and forearm. He’d foregone the armor, except for his combat boots. The others hadn’t asked, but it was a calculated choice.

When or if an attack came, he would look an easier target than Gilly or Felix or Gabriel.

Hopefully.

Khalida Al-Hashara entered from the front, her aide a step behind. She wore ivory from head to toe, her bearing sharp enough to cut the tension in the room simply by walking through it. Her gaze swept both guilds, taking in the armor, the weapons, and the combat readiness.

She nodded. They were all on the same page, even if the Sheikha’s own armor was to be pure confidence in the rest of them.

“We begin in two minutes,” she said. “I will take the stage first. Once I’ve finished the introductions, the Throne of Scales will join me, followed by Grimnir.” Khalida turned to Maximilian, then to Alexander. “Gentlemen. After today, there is no going back.”

Maximilian gave a single nod.

Alexander grinned. “That’s why it’s called ‘making history.’”

Khalida allowed herself the faintest smile. “Then let’s end the day victorious, yes? I’m told they’re the ones who write it.”

Then she turned and left the tent, her aide remaining behind.

The television showed her emerge into the sunlight moments later. She walked the paved path to the stage, climbed the steps, and crossed to the podium. The crowd quieted as she took her position.

“Good morning,” Khalida said, her voice carrying across the terrace with authority. “Thank you all for being here. I know many of you have traveled a great distance, and I appreciate both your time and your trust.”

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

She paused, letting the pleasantries settle.

“We live in a world where superhumans fly our skies, walk our streets, and wield powers that can reshape cities in moments. Most use those gifts in service of others. Some do not. And too often, those who should hold them accountable have chosen instead to look the other way. And worse.”

Another pause. Longer this time.

“What my colleagues and I have to present today will be shocking to many of you. It will be distressing for most. I ask only that you listen to the end before passing judgment, because the world you think you live in is not the world that exists.”

The crowd had gone still.

“First, please welcome to the stage the Throne of Scales, led by the renowned Dragon Lord, Maximilian de Castillo.” Khalida held out a hand to the left of the stage. “He is joined today by the Ice Queen, Julia Delvane, Raelene West, Draven Vance, and Cash McKay.”

Maximilian straightened. He glanced once at his team, and they moved as a unit, filing out of the tent and into the sunlight.

Julia shared a brief look with Alexander that conveyed everything. They’d shared a quiet moment that morning, privately, though neither of them had touched upon what was to come. Their worries didn’t need to be explained. Neither did their determination to see it through.

The crowd’s murmuring swelled, then steadied as they took the left path to the stage, climbed the steps, and crossed to their seats. Julia offered a small wave to the audience. Cash gave a lazy salute. Maximilian sat without fanfare, posture perfect, eyes forward.

Alexander glanced at Mirror, who remained near the refreshment table in her combat gear. “Not joining them?”

She smiled. “It didn’t feel like my place. Not yet.” The smile faded into something harder. “But I wanted to be here. Just in case.”

He gave her a nod. He understood exactly what she meant.

On screen, Khalida continued.

“Next, allow me to introduce a guild that is equally well known, though for very different reasons.” Her voice carried the faintest edge of amusement. “Please welcome to the stage Grimnir, led by the infamous Machine God, Alexander Rooke. He is joined by Annette Sheridan, Augustus Greaves, Talia Kim, and Gabriel Cross.” She paused, and then her tone shifted. “They are also accompanied by two individuals I feel I must prepare you for. Their names are Felix and Gilly. Both are aliens from other worlds, brought here illegally and against their will.”

Alexander glanced around the tent, meeting the eyes of his friends and family. Nothing more needed to be said. They had laid their traps. Discussed their plans. Wondered about the outcome and how the world would change afterwards.

They were as ready as they could be.

All that remained was to walk out there and do it. Alexander grinned. “That’s us.”

Annie clapped. “Excellent speech. Ten out of ten. So professional. Would recommend.”

“Says you. Wearing that.”

She glanced down at her shirt. “Dude, it’s called marketing. Do you have any idea how many people are going to be watching?”

Augustus chuckled.

“Billions,” Talia said, heading for their exit, but stopping just shy of the flap. “Shall we? Or are we going to keep the entire world waiting while you bicker?”

Alexander dashed for the flap ahead of Annie. “Supervillains first, short sidekicks second.” Then pushed the flap open and stepped out into the light.

He walked the paved stone path set into manicured grass without hurry, even knowing the world was waiting on them. Droney floated at his shoulder, scanning the surroundings, and behind him, the others followed.

His senses washed outward as he moved. Electrokinesis flooded his Core, sharpening everything. The feedback was immediate. Hundreds of bioelectrical signatures resolved across the terrace and beyond, followed by cameras and drones. Communication feeds broadcasting to the world. Security personnel with weapons charged and ready. ESA superhumans positioned at the perimeter.

And scattered among the crowd, a handful of signatures whose Wills rose as his powers brushed against them. Pushing back. Shutting him out. He didn’t press. Didn’t need to.

He was merely saying hello.

Alexander climbed the two steps to the stage and paused, taking in the crowd. There were over two hundred people seated in neat rows across the white marble terrace. Reporters with tablets and recording equipment. Guests in formal attire. Security lining every edge.

A sharp whistle cut through the noise from the front row.

He looked down and found a friendly face. Hjordis sat with a grin that belonged in a bar fight, not a press conference. Beside her, a man who looked like he’d be the guy Grimnir would go to for tax advice met Alexander’s gaze with an intensity that didn’t match the glasses or the suit. His Will had been one of those that rose to meet Alexander’s sweep. Even with such brief contact, it had felt unyielding.

The Northern Shield himself. And Hjordis’s little brother.

Interesting.

Alexander grinned, tossed them a wave, then strode across the stage to the leftmost chair on Grimnir’s side. He settled in and crossed one leg over the other, watching the others take their positions. Talia sat beside him, then Gabriel, Gilly, and Felix in the protected center, with Augustus next, and Annie at the far end.

He turned to his left, where Maximilian sat closest to the podium on the Throne’s side. Their eyes met. Then they both turned back, surveying the crowd.

Alexander picked out the Wills that had pushed back against him. The Northern Shield and Hjordis, of course. The Nakamura twins, both staring at a fixed point near the stage, before their heads shifted in unison to track something else. A couple of ESA superhumans along the perimeter. The AEGIS representative, Regional Director Priscilla Gant, whom he recognized from one of Talia’s intelligence briefings, seated at the far left of the front row. And the man in the grey suit and dark glasses standing just behind her in the walkway.

The crowd hadn’t stopped buzzing since Khalida’s announcement. The noise had swelled as Felix took the stage, purple skin, wings flared, and twin tails curling behind him. It surged again when Gilly sat down, six eyes blinking against the glare, his own blue skin vivid against the black armor.

Alexander could feel the cameras and drones, their signals pulsing outward, carrying the image of everything happening on this stage to every screen on the planet.

The world was watching.

And they hadn’t even gotten to the fun part yet.
