Chapter 424 – The Arena Part 3
Damion elected to wait and see what the Silver Winged Eagle would do, and the Demonic Beast proved to be less patient than he was. After only circling the arena a few times the bird dove towards Damion as he watched it from the ground.
The Demonic Beast swooped past him before flying up high and circling back to make another pass. As the Silver Winged Eagle flew past him, it attempted to sweep its wings against him, which Damion knew was the equivalent of being slashed with a sword. The feathers on the outer edges of its wings could be made razor sharp by one of the creature’s abilities. Even a glancing blow from them would be enough to slice through most armor.
As the Silver Winged Eagle dove down for another pass, Damion came up with a plan. When he was sure the Demonic Beast was too close to be able to stop, he cast Ice Wall in the path of the bird. He continued to feed mana into his spell to make the wall of ice as large as possible to make sure the Silver Winged Eagle would not be able to dodge. In the few seconds it took him to cast the spell and build the Ice Wall, the Demonic Beast realized what was happening and tried to pull up to avoid it, but a sickening crunch a moment later told Damion the creature failed.
Given the size of his Ice Wall, Damion did not bother to go around it to check on the Demonic Beast. Instead, he willed a doorway to open as he let the rest of the Ice Wall begin to crumble. This allowed him to walk through the Ice Wall even as parts of it were starting to fall away.
On the other side of the Ice Wall, Damion found the Silver Winged Eagle struggling to get to its feet. The Demonic Beast’s left wing was limp at its side, parts of it twisted at an ugly angle that told Damion the creature would not be taking to the sky again.
Damion raised his palm and cast Ice Shard. The razor-sharp icicle that leapt from his palm cut into the Silver Winged Eagle’s neck, putting a quick end to its misery.
With a third victory, the crowd once again erupted in cheers and applause. One B Rank and now two A Rank opponents defeated with relative ease told Damion he was pretty well acclimated to his new power. Now what he needed was a challenge and he had no doubt Visault and his father would rise to the occasion.
The first A Rank beast had been just over the threshold of A Rank, though its defense was higher because of its affinity. The second had a higher offensive ability, but without the ability to actually land a blow on Damion, it mattered little.
After the Silver Winged Eagle carcass was removed from the arena another opponent was raised up through the door in the floor and this time Damion was not sure what to think. Instead of a Demonic Beast, this time he was facing an Alfar.
This Alfar, being only the third time he had ever encountered one, was male and looked to be younger than him. However, Damion could tell by the magic power radiating off of him that their magic power was around the same level. He even thought that perhaps the Alfar was slightly stronger. Despite looking younger, Damion was sure the Alfar was older than he was, and it was simply the small stature of their race that was misleading.
While the Alfar was raised into the arena the crowd booed and jeered at him. Damion was not sure where the people of Ardnet had captured this Alfar but given the two peoples were at war it was a safe guess that this man was a captured soldier. The chains binding the newcomer had gems in them and True Sight told Damion they were artifacts made with Magic Absorbing Crystals that prevented those shackled with them from casting spells.
As soon as the lift locked into place with the arena floor, the chains released from the Alfar’s wrists and ankles, and he lunged towards Damion.
Damion was caught off guard by the Alfar lunging at him. Since the Alfar could use magic, he expected his opponent to cast a spell first, but instead the two ended up grappling. As they rolled around the floor of the arena, small hands trying to lock themselves around Damion’s neck, he realized he had not fought like this before, few mages had.
Stolen story; please report.
While Damion was trying to keep the Alfar’s hands from strangling him, the smaller being opened its mouth wide, displaying its razor-sharp teeth and started its head forward to Damion’s neck. Remembering his last encounter with an Alfar, Damion quickly cast Ice Armor, encasing his body in in a strong layer of ice. The Alfar’s teeth bit into the ice protecting his neck, but despite the sharpness of the attacker’s teeth, they were not able to penetrate Ice Armor.
Not wanting the Alfar to try its sinking teeth in again, Damion Blinked into the air, leaving his opponent on the arena floor. While in the air he cast Ice Sword and hovered while casting spells at his opponent. Ice Shards rained down on the Alfar, but he quickly dodged the spells, darting around the arena while trying to get into Damion’s blind spot.
With Ice Sword, Damion was able to effortless float in the air while the Alfar danced around below dodging spells. The more spells that missed, the more Damion grew frustrated. The Alfar was a slippery opponent, often dodging at the last second.
After another series of spells missed Damion decided to try a different method. With one hand he cast a spell at the Alfar, but he also cast another spell in his other hand at the place he thought the Alfar was most likely to dodge.
Either through luck, skill or some ability, the Alfar was able to seemingly effortless dodge his Ice Shards. This left Damion with the options of becoming unpredictable, predicting his opponent’s movements, or casting spells impossible to dodge. Since he did not want to resort to his most powerful spells just yet, Damion chose to try and guess where the Alfar would dodge to after his first spell was avoided.
Unfortunately, Damion’s plan was not as effective as he would have liked. The Alfar did end up exactly where his second spell was going to land but was able to Blink away before the spell could connect. Seeing the Alfar use Spatial magic, Damion decided to try and overwhelm his opponent.
No matter how well the Alfar could dodge, using magic to dodge would consume mana and Damion suspected that whatever spell or ability was being used to avoid his attacks, also required mana. If there was one thing he was confident about, it was that he could survive a battle of attrition better than anyone else.
This time Damion dual cast Summon Ice and split the two ice blocks into dozens of shards. Ice Shard could be cast faster, but he could easily control the ice formed from Summon Ice. He launched one flurry of ice crystals at the Alfar, who was forced to Blink away since the area they covered was much too large to dodge. While Damion willed the first group to chase after the Alfar, he sent the second group towards where it reappeared.
A second later the Alfar was forced to Blink again, then again and again as Damion continued to pressure his opponent with his hail of ice crystals.
Damion could tell the Alfar was getting desperate and he expected his opponent to try directly attacking him soon. A few seconds later, the Alfar disappeared from view and Damion felt a blow land on his back. Unfortunately, for the smaller man, the physical attack was far from enough to cause harm.
With the combination of his Magic System armor, normal artifact armor and Ice Armor, not to mention his own above average strength thanks to the Strength Potions, Damion felt the blow, but aside from his Ice Sword swaying slighting in the air, did not move.
The Alfar, however, was not so lucky. Having put his full strength behind the blow, there was a sickening crunch as the bones in the Alfar’s fist crumbled and his wrist snapped. To his credit he did not let out a scream, but the injury was still serious and the sudden shock of it was enough to slow his wits and dull his responses.
Damion quickly turned and cast a second Ice Sword, this one was not in its flying sword formation, but what he thought of as its combat form. The blade came to life as he spun and by the time it was fully formed, Damion was facing the Alfar and the blade sliced cleanly through its neck.
The Alfar’s headless body fell to the ground just as the crowd erupted in more cheers. Damion looked down at the corpse and its head, which had landed a meter away, and decided he was through. This fight had helped him see what the Alfar were capable of, and he had a good idea of what he needed to do to prepare for a large scale confrontation with them.
However, before any of that happened, he needed to go home. He needed to see his family, to let them know he was alive. Even with the message he had already sent, he would not be satisfied they knew and were doing okay until he held them in his arms.
