Chapter 422 – The Arena Part 1
“If you can teach me how make grimoires, you can examine my auto-mapper to your heart’s content,” Damion told Visault.
If his school was going to be a success, they needed the ability that grimoires offered. Being able to have an artifact that made using and memorizing spells easy was undeniably useful. Not only did it solve their problem, but it potentially offered the ability to far surpass the traditional mages of the other academies since Damion felt sure the number of spells in the grimoire was not going to be as limited like the number of spells human mages could currently learn.
“That should not be a problem, but I do have a question.”
“Sure, what is it?” Damion asked the Iblis.
“How do you memorize spells if you do engrave them on your core or have a grimoire?”
The question was a sensitive one for Damion. And despite knowing the answer, the Magic System, he did not have an understanding of how it worked.
“I just do,” Damion answered. “I suppose I have a better memory than most.”
Damion took out his auto-mapper and offered it to Visault. The Iblis took it and stored it in his spatial artifact before informing the human of when he would be receiving instructions on creating grimoires.
“I will have the schematics delivered to you. You should be aware; grimoires are best created by the person using one. There is a bond that forms during the creation of the artifact which allows for greater communication between the artifact and the mage.”

“That should not be an issue,” Damion said, not missing a beat, despite the Magic System notification going off. “We’ll be teaching the students, and they will make their own in time. I just have to get home so they can incorporate grimoires into their lessons.”
“Are you intending to attempt to open a Portal?” Visault asked.
“I can feel I am close, but something tells me I do not quite have either the magic power or the mana required to establish the link. Perhaps with a few more days of training.”
“Perhaps,” Visault agreed, though he was not eager for the key to their success leaving the Mother World, still, Damion had promised to return, which was of course easier than leaving. “I have an idea that might interest you.”
“And what is that?”
“We have what a training arena, a place where young mages go to challenge other mages and beasts. You have just risen in Rank and probably need time to adjust to your new powers. Though, I would recommend you not wear those training bangles, the fighting in the arena can be quite intense.”
If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from NovelFire. Please report it.
“Is that so?” Damion smiled.
A short time later, Damion was standing in the training arena waiting for his opponent, which was a peak B Rank Demonic Beast, to be released. When Visault told him this was an arena he had not considered what he meant too deeply, however, now that Damion was here, he was seeing that this arena was more than just a training center, it was a spectacle for the masses.
He was basically in the bottom of a bowl, and the sides were filled with seats in which thousands of Iblis were watching. Damion had a feeling that this was Visualt’s way of introducing the human true mage to his people. Internally, he was wondering if there was a risk of the Alfar seeing what he was capable of, but since he had no way to know or control that, he put the worry out of his mind and focused. Even though he had stepped into A Rank, facing a peak B Rank Demonic Beast was not going to be easy.
The wait for his opponent was not long. In the center of the arena floor a concealed door cracked open causing the crowd to erupt in cheers. As the door opened, a platform rose, lifting a chained Demonic Beast to the arena floor. Once the platform was locked in place, the chains around the beast dropped away, allowing the creature to rush at Damion.
True Sight confirmed for him that the Demonic Beast was B Rank. The creature looked to be some variety of insect, though it was not small by any means. The centipede looking creature had a bright red carapace on its back, while its underside was pale yellow. Overall, it was around five meters long and had a set of mandibles below three sets of eyes on either side of its head.
The Demonic Beast was surprisingly agile, which Damion discovered when he dodged out of the way of its initial charge. Its body was able to bend at right angles, allowing it to change directions quickly.
In the wild Damion would have been quick to attack the creature with a strong spell to end the fight, but he was here for training. As the Demonic Beast chased after him, Damion continued to dodge, testing his reflexes and attempting to stay just one step ahead of the creature.
After only a few dodges, the crowd began to boo. They were here to be entertained and Damion’s evasion, while impressive, was not thrilling. The crowd wanted action. Hearing the boos, Damion decided to go ahead and move on to his next opponent.
With a quick Blink he positioned himself behind the centipede’s head and slashed his Ice Sword down. The blow cut through the carapace of the Demonic Beast, killing it and nearly bisecting the creature’s head in the process.
The sudden killing blow elicited cheers from the watching crowd. Damion felt a surge of pride listening to the applause and praise, but he mentally forced it aside. He was here to train, the praise was nice, but it was a distraction. This was not the time for getting pats on the back. Any loss of focus could prove disastrous, especially once the strength of his opponents rose.
While the arena announcer was busy singing praises and informing the crowd about the Demonic Beast, which was apparently called a Cataractipod, attendants rushed into the arena and were clearing the dead creature from the floor. Once Damion was alone again in the arena, the announcer hushed the crowd in preparation for the next fight.
The door in the floor of the arena cracked open again, this time raising up an A Rank Demonic Beast and one Damion was familiar with. This was an Emperor Chalco Beetle. The Stone affinity Demonic Beast would have an exceptionally high defense and considering it was A Rank like he was, could prove a difficult challenge.
Once the chains were released, Damion and the Emperor Chalco Beetle wasted no time to start their battle. Since the Demonic Beast had a Stone affinity, Damion started off with the tier 4 spell Water Cannon. The high-powered blast of water hit the creature in its face and caused the beast to take a few steps back. However, once the giant beetle stabilized itself, it let out a loud cry and charged forward.
Damion used Shadow Step to move from where he was to the Emperor Chalco Beetle’s shadow and cast Ice Wall. The spell sprang to life under the tail end of the Demonic Beast, causing its hindquarters to rise up. Unfortunately, Damion’s plan to flip the Demonic Beast over failed, with the creature able to take a few steps forward, pulling itself off the Ice Wall and with the last step kicking backwards, shattering the wall.
