Chapter 405 – Upgrades
‘System, give me a summary of the quests I recently completed.’
{Affirmative.}
[Quest: Kill B Rank Ferocious Beasts or Demonic Beasts, fully completed.]
[Quest: Kill A Rank Ferocious Beasts or Demonic Beasts, completed three times. Current status 3 of 25.]
[Quest: Increase a Magic Spell in Rank, completed six times.]
[Quest: Discover the Origin of Goblins, complete.]
[Quest: Discover the Goal of the Iblis, complete.]
[Hidden Quest: The Mother World, complete.]
Damion knew without even checking his status that he had just received a huge boost in credits. The real question though, was how should he spend those credits? He was now in a foreign land and most goblins thought all humans were evil, he had a feeling that the Alfar felt the same way. B Rank was strong, but it was likely nothing compared to the powerhouses of this world. Was it finally time to spend credits on a boost to his magic power?
‘Yes, most definitely going to be buying upgrades to magic power,’ Damion thought after the next message from the Magic System popped up.
*Ding*
{Bonus reward granted for arriving on Mother World before reaching S Rank.}
‘System, what is my bonus reward? Is it more credits?’
{Bonus reward is one free item from the Magic System Shop.}
‘One time from the System Shop?,’ Damion scoffed at first, but then he realized the Magic System had not indicated what item it would be. ‘System, do I get to choose which item I want for my reward?’
{Affirmative.}
‘And it can be any item?’
{Affirmative.}
‘System, with the upgrade to level 4, were there any new items unlocked in the store?’
{The new feature unlocked from System increasing to level 4 is the ability to purchase: Quest Assistance. Each Quest Hint purchased costs 1,000 credits. Would you like to use your free item on a Quest Hint?}
“No!” Damion shouted out loud, before calming himself, “I mean, no. System can I use my free item to get the Attribute Anti-Regression Potion?”
{Affirmative. Would you like to use your free item on an Attribute Anti-Regression Potion?}
“Yes,” Damion told the System.
*Ding*
{Purchase complete.}
Finally, after years of staring at it, the grand prize, and he would not even have to save up all the credits needed. Now he could put all the credits he had to good use. He needed to acquire more power to be safe in this world and his penny pinching seemed to be finally paying off. He had a few million credits to spend, and he felt it was no longer necessary to hold back. The question though, was how many credits he had. The Magic System said before that he had completed a number of quests, one of which he had no idea what the reward was.
‘System, status.’

“Fourteen… fourteen million,” Damion could hardly believe his eyes. The hidden quest he completed evidently had been worth ten million credits. Now he had even more credits to work with. ‘First things first. System, Inventory.’
The contents of the Magic System Inventory appeared in his mind and Damion mentally selected the Attribute Anti-Regression Potion and told it to consume. The potion icon in the Inventory vanished and, while Damion did not feel any different, he was sure the System had provided him the benefits.
Now the question he was left with was, what should he upgrade first? Should he buy more affinities? Being able to get affinities like Void or Time would be excellent, but he had to face reality, he had no spells for those affinities.
Should he increase his A Rank affinities higher? He had resisted pushing his A Rank affinities to S or higher for fear of it altering his hair and it becoming apparent that he had multiple affinities. But now that he was on a foreign world, that did not seem to matter so much anymore. By the time he returned to Nerotath he was sure he was going to be strong enough that it did not matter what other people thought.
‘New affinities mean new spells, but spell slots are already super expensive and will only keep growing higher. I’ll hold off on new affinities until I run into a must have. I’m not going to spend all my money on purchases, I’ll keep some in reserve, just in case.’
Damion began browsing through the Magic System Store. Each purchase would have its benefits, and each would have detractors. He wanted to just buy a huge increase to magic power, but could his body handle it? Now that he had consumed the Anti-Regression Potion, he could buy Strength Potions and Dexterity Potions and not have to worry about constantly striving to maintain his physical condition.
‘System, how much would it cost me to purchase 45 Strength Potions?”
{45 Strength Potions would cost 2,994,151 credits.}
‘That isn’t too bad,’ Damion thought. Three million was a huge chunk of his current credits, but if he wanted to improve his magic power, he needed to begin to increase his body’s strength. His Training Bangles helped, and now that he had access to his Inventory he would put them back on, but this would be a big boost that should let him easily naturally increase his magic power. Then, if he hit a bottleneck in his magic power training, he could spend more credits to buy boosts to his magic power.
‘Wait, System, the cost for those Strength Potions seems low.’
{The price for Strength Potions reaches its cap on the nineteenth purchase.}
‘Cap? What is the price cap?
This was the first time he was hearing about a price cap on purchases. The System had told him long ago that the prices of item purchases increased by half with each purchase, a cap meant that there was a maximum price the System would charge him. He was not surprised the System never mentioned it, but it was important information to have. If there was a max price to pay for upgrades, then it would stop the cost of any upgrade from becoming prohibitively expensive, after all, just 45 Strength Potions was nearly 3 million credits.
{The maximum price for an Upgrade is 100,000 credits.}
‘Good to know,’ Damion thought. ‘System, how much will 60 Dexterity Potions cost me?’
{60 Dexterity Potions would cost 4,494,151 credits.}
‘Just under seven and a half million credits,’ Damion realized as he added the two prices together. Half the credits he had, but still, less than what he had gained in the last day.
‘System, purchase 45 Strength Potions and 60 Dexterity Potions.’
{Affirmative. Upgrades purchased for 7,488,302.}
The moment the Magic System confirmed the purchase, Damion opened up the System Inventory and selected the two stacks of potions and mentally hit consume. For a moment, Damion felt nothing was different, but then he started to move, and he could feel the sudden change in equilibrium.
The sudden increase to his abilities might take him a day or two to get used to, but he would manage. Now that he had greatly boosted his strength, he decided to check on the next set of purchases. He had four A Rank affinities, to boost all four to S Rank would cost 8,125 credits. To SS Rank, 49,252 and SSS Rank, 257,447 and if he wanted to push them EX Rank, 657,447.
It was do able, but would it be useful was the question. In the end he decided to just boost his Spatial affinity up. That was the affinity he would need if he wanted to return to Nerotath. Perhaps if his Spatial affinity was maxed out opening a Portal to another world would not be too hard of a task.
‘System, purchase four Increase Magic Affinity upgrades and apply them to my Spatial affinity.’
{Affirmative. Upgrades Purchased for 8,125 credits.}
{Applying upgrades to Spatial affinity…}
{Upgrades complete. Congratulations Host for acquiring EX Rank Spatial affinity.}
