Chapter 213 - 212: Third Uncle’s Arrival (Third Update)
Gu Xiaoqing noticed that the faces of Mr. Wu and Wu Fengying didn’t look good, and it was obvious that Mr. Wu was a bit regretful. He gave a quick look to Li Xuemei on the other side.
If you don’t give him a way out, how can he step down gracefully?
Li Xuemei had already become very shrewd due to her years in business.
Knowing her daughter managed to get things done, she said to the matchmaker next to her, "Aunt, why don’t you try persuading them one more time? If it still doesn’t work, we won’t blame you."
The matchmaker sighed; after all, it was her matchmaking that brought this marriage together, and if it doesn’t work out, she would feel guilty too.
So she put on a big smile, looking as bright as a peony, and approached again. This time things went well. Without any fuss, Mr. Wu from the Wu family cheerfully got out of the car.
The back door opened, and Li Jianhui also got out, carrying Wu Fengying to the new house.
The matchmaker couldn’t figure out what was happening for a while.
She felt vexed—was the Wu family playing a trick on her?
Finally, everything settled down.
The banquet began.
Many people from the village came to celebrate.
For Li Qinghai’s two grandsons’ wedding, they set up a hundred tables for the banquet.
Dishes kept coming, with good cigarettes and liquor laid out, thus the banquet finally started.
Gu Xiaoqing and Gu Xiaoying only ate a little; they weren’t interested in all this meat and fish as they’re not short of these in the city. Watching the people around them gobble down food and drinks, and some even tearing apart a whole chicken, stuffing it into greasy paper bags to take home for their kids.
Even now, the rural areas couldn’t be considered affluent.
So they weren’t very hungry either.
When the villagers left, those remaining packed up the leftover food, which was still good stuff.
The aunts helping out all took a big bag home, as a token of appreciation for their help.
Everyone was happy.
Gu Ruhai and Li Xuemei took the kids and went home too.
With the wedding done, there was nothing more for them as aunt and uncle to do.
On the way home, Li Xuemei curiously asked Gu Xiaoqing, "What did you say to them that got those two to come down? It seemed like they came down quite willingly."
Li Xuemei knew her daughter, and there were probably no kind words exchanged.
Gu Xiaoqing chuckled, "I just said if they don’t get out of the car, I’ll have the driver take the bride back."
Li Xuemei burst into laughter, poking Gu Xiaoqing’s forehead and scolding, "You’re just causing trouble for your uncle and them. Luckily, the Wu family was intimidated by you. If they had really gotten angry and left, I wonder what you’d do then?"
Thinking about it, it was indeed a bit daunting.
Gu Ruhai, however, defended his daughter immediately, "My daughter wasn’t wrong. I think those two daughters-in-law aren’t good news. They’ve just entered the family and already dared to assert themselves like that. There’s no way they’ll be peaceable in the future. We’d be better off sending them back."
Li Xuemei glared at Gu Ruhai accusingly and said, "You just keep defending her. She’s eighteen now, and in a few years, she’ll be getting married. If nobody dares to take such a bold wife, what will you do? Keep her at home as an old maid?"
Though knowing how dear Gu Ruhai cares for the children like precious jewels over the years, she couldn’t help but complain.
Gu Ruhai grinned and said, "My daughter is wonderful. If someone rejects her for being bold, that’s their loss for not having foresight. Our daughter doesn’t need to marry. She can stay at home; I, Gu Ruhai, can afford to keep my daughter.
Besides, your daughter’s worth more than I am now, I should be the one to be supported."
Li Xuemei had nothing to retort.
Having such a protective father, who knows whether it’s a blessing or a curse?
If the children were to tear the roof down, Gu Ruhai wouldn’t say a word.
As soon as they got home, they saw Aunt Zhang coming out.
The car was parked.
Aunt Zhang quietly told Li Xuemei, "Your third brother is back, with his whole family, and they are inside talking to your parents. I have a feeling they didn’t come with good intentions, so you should be careful."
Li Xuemei nodded gratefully.
Aunt Zhang went back home.
Li Xuemei and Gu Ruhai got out of the car and went inside, seeing Gu Ruhe, Xiao Xue, Mr. Gu, Mrs. Gu, Gu Xiaofeng, and Gu Xiaomin sitting under the grapevine arbor.
Gu Xiaofeng was already quite tall, like a teenager, but he seemed to have also gained weight.
The flesh on his face was so squeezed together that his eyes were almost invisible, yet he was still stuffing his mouth with cake. Gu Xiaoqing recognized those cakes as the fresh city-style ones they brought back home.
This kid barely stopped eating; he shoved more inside before even swallowing the last bite.
Gu Xiaomin was sitting on a stool, holding Xiao Jie’s game console, engrossed in playing.
When Gu Ruhe and Xiao Xue saw Gu Ruhai and Li Xuemei, they stood up, smiling, and greeted, "Big brother, sister-in-law, you’re back."
Xiao Xue warmly greeted, "Wow, Xiaoying and Xiaoqing have grown up so much, and Xiaojie, why so thin? Sister-in-law, this child shouldn’t eat so little during growth spurts, or he might not grow taller in the future."
This rare greeting made Gu Xiaoying and Gu Xiaoqing feel a bit uncomfortable.
Xiao Xue and Jiang Xiulan were different; someone who always held herself so high all of a sudden being enthusiastic to those she previously disregarded—it felt odd.
Li Xuemei smiled and said, "Sister-in-law, how come you have the time to visit with the third brother?"
Xiao Xue giggled, "We heard that mom and dad came back, so we rushed back, just to show some filial respect."
In her heart, Li Xuemei scoffed. Filial respect? If they were really filial, they wouldn’t have abandoned the old lady in the city, leaving the old man alone without caring.
"Give me back my game console!"
Xiao Jie was long unhappy. Seeing Gu Xiaomin playing his console so happily, his eyes turned red.
That game console was something Gu Xiaojie begged Gu Xiaoqing for months to buy for him, cherishing it dearly, so watching someone else playing it made him anxious.
Gu Xiaomin was engrossed in the game and, upon looking up and seeing Xiao Jie’s upset face, swatted away Xiao Jie’s reaching hand, saying, "What a miser! I’m just playing a bit, and besides, granny said it’s for me."
Hearing this, Xiao Jie became furious and quickly snatched the game console from Gu Xiaomin’s hand. After all, being a boy, Xiao Jie was stronger and had the upper hand against the fifteen-sixteen-year-old girl Gu Xiaomin.
Gu Xiaomin refused to give up, reaching to scratch Xiao Jie’s face, crying, "Why? Granny gave it to me. Give it back, or I’ll tear you apart." (To be continued.
