Chapter 838: Nothing Could Be Better
Yun Jiao was holding Qi Er, teasing him as she spoke. Cai Ping came in to report, "Commander Lin is here."
Now the Duke is the Commander of the Imperial Army, and Lin Shuo also holds a command position in the Forbidden Army.
Yun Jiao sent someone to call Nanny Su, and then she took Qi Er to the front courtyard.
When she arrived at the front hall, Lin Shuo was already there. He bent down and gave Yun Jiao a deep bow, "Thank you, sister-in-law. Without you, who knows where Qi Er would have ended up."
Almost two years had passed since they last met, and Lin Shuo looked a bit more tanned, with his features appearing even more resolute.
Yun Jiao patted the Qi Er in her arms, "This is also Qi Er’s good fortune. Out of so many people in Xiang City, he happened to meet me."
She gently touched Qi Er’s head, "Be good, Qi Er. This is your father. Call him father."
Qi Er turned his head and hid his face in Yun Jiao’s embrace.
Lin Shuo smiled bitterly. He had come to Xiang City not long after Qi Er was born, so the child was completely unfamiliar with him.
At this time, Nanny Su hurried over.
As soon as she entered the room, the slightly uneasy Qi Er in Yun Jiao’s arms reached out for her to hold him. All his sense of security over the past year had come from Nanny Su.
Nanny Su took Qi Er and held him in her arms, tears streaming down her face as she looked at Lin Shuo.
Lin Shuo suddenly knelt before Nanny Su, lifting his robe as he did so.
Nanny Su quickly stepped aside, "Young master, you mustn’t, you absolutely mustn’t."
Lin Shuo solemnly said, "Nanny Su, your righteousness is admirable. If it weren’t for you protecting Qi Er, in such a chaotic world, this child would probably be lost."
"It is only right that I bow to you."
"From now on, you will no longer be a servant. In the future, Qi Er will look after you in your old age."
Nanny Su wiped her tears, "Young master, please don’t say such things. Protecting the little master was my duty all along."
Yun Jiao went forward and helped Nanny Su to sit down, "The child is heavy, you should sit and talk."
Only then did Lin Shuo stand up.
Nanny Su sat down and looked at Qi Er, "Nanny has told Qi Er before, we came to Xiang City to find dad. This is your dad."
"Call him dad, Qi Er."
Qi Er timidly looked at Lin Shuo and then buried his head in Nanny Su’s arms again.
Yun Jiao had heard Jiang Youzhi mention that Lin Shuo had been living at the garrison headquarters, now he eats and sleeps in the military camp and hasn’t bought a house in the city. So she asked, "How do you plan to arrange for Qi Er and Nanny Su?"
Lin Shuo was at a loss for a moment; after thinking about it, he said, "I will buy a house as soon as possible and hire a few servants to take care of Qi Er and Nanny Su."
Yun Jiao slightly frowned, as there would be no master in the house; even though there was Nanny Su, she was getting old. The newly hired servants—who knew if they would be lazy or deceitful?
Moreover, Lin Shuo is now focused on training troops with the Duke and rarely returns home every ten days or so. How would the child’s upbringing be managed? It couldn’t be entirely left to the servants, could it?
Yun Jiao lowered her head and pondered for a moment, "How about this: If Brother Lin doesn’t mind, let Nanny Su and Qi Er stay at the Duke Mansion."
"I have Ruru and You Er, two children, to manage here as well, so taking care of Qi Er alongside them would be convenient."
Lin Shuo was troubled. Buying a house and hiring some servants was easy, just a matter of spending some silver, but raising the child required more. Nanny Su was clearly not up to the task.
What to do? Marry again to have someone educate the child?
That didn’t seem like a good idea either.
Hearing Yun Jiao’s words, Lin Shuo was overjoyed and gave Yun Jiao a deep bow, "This is the best arrangement."
"It’s just, it will be a burden for you."
