Adventures of the last Wild Dragon

Chapter 338: Arrayed Against a Sovereign

As the world flashed purple for a moment Violet felt her mana surge through her with worrying speed.

She was only sitting at around half capacity and she felt like if the drain on her mana persisted for much longer she may fully bottom out.

Thankfully that didn’t quite happen, instead she was left with barely a trickle of mana by the time that her runic array came fully into effect.

Dozens of runes around the sovereign flaired with power as their effects locked in on their target.

Each rune describing a fundamental aspect of the effect she desired. Each one carefully crafted, yet even with the vast improvements her skill with runes had improved, Violet still found herself worrying if she had done it correctly.

Yet when she watched the interplay of mana surrounding the sovereign she found herself smiling wide.

**

Jack was beginning to struggle, he regretted not working harder to finish off the first couple of beasts right at the start of the fight. Instead he let his pride get in the way and continued to not take the threat they posed seriously.

Now he was struggling as more and more Beast Lords joined in on the fight against him. Each one proving a nuisance that claimed just a bit more of his already strained attention.

The fight had fully turned into a desperate battle with his life potentially on the line.

Still he was confident in his victory. After all he was a sovereign, a relatively powerful one at that, whilst those arrayed against him were near Lords, tier 4 beasts that stood no change against him.

Although, he grunted as yet another ice blade jabbed into his side as a wooden shield slammed into his mace, deflecting the blow aimed at the annoying ice wielder.

He had to admit that their were some standouts amongst the beasts. Particularly that leopard beast that shifted into a human form.

Jack knew enough about beasts to know that only truly extraordinary beasts gained the ability to shapeshift, and her talent with hit and run tactics was truly frustratingly effective.

Still that only made him more excited to put down the beast pretending to be a human, he would just have to work a bit harder for it.

Then a bright purple flash enveloped the world around him, his powerful consitution allowed his eyes to not be injured by the flash, yet he instantly felt something was off the moment that flash occoured.

Another blade of ice raced towards him from his side, he instinctively flaired his condensed domain in an automatic reflex to slow down the attack by repelling it away from his body. Yet he felt his eyes open wide when, instead of slowing her attack, the blade instead sped up and it raced towards his armoured body.

The impact was noticeably more powerful than any other attack he had received thus far.

Jack was still trying to understand what had happened when that small red dragon rushed in from his other side, its blazing claws extended.

He turned his body slightly, his shield radiating gravity to pull the attack towards it, yet he once again frowned when the opposite effect occoured, instead of pulling the claws towards his shield the claw instead seemed to effortlessly flow around it to slash into his side.

His powerful armour was actually torn and his blood flowed for the first time of the battle.

His eyes opened wide in surprise, yet they almost popped out of his head when a dozen different attacks all raced at him from every conceivable direction. Each attack seemingly sped up the moment it touched his repulsive gravity domain.

The series of rapid and unnaturally powerful projectiles rocked Jack, sending him staggering backwards, finally causing him to be the one pushed back instead of the other way around.

A grunt of pain escaped his lips as he frantically tried to understand what was going on, why was his abilities failing him? How was that possible? A thousand and one thoughts raced through Jack until his eyes focused on the floating onyx and purple dragon hovering in the sky and the dozens of runic symbols carved into reality all around him.

His gaze turned cold as he realised that it was the Wild Dragons doing. His determination to slaughter that beast only growing.

Violet meanwhile completely ignored the sudden wave of killing intent she felt from the human general. She simply didn’t have the mental capacity to care about that.

He entire mind was near entirely devoted to maintaining the runic array. It was not a passive magical effect, but one that needed constant attention and carefull adjustments, all the while acting as a mental battle between the sovereigns will and her own nacent intent.

What she was doing was effectively manually adjusting the effects of gravity that were formed by the human.

Every time that he set up an effect to repel something she instead inverted that meaning to attract. When the gravity around his flaired to block an incoming attack, she inverted it to lighten whatever passed through allowing for greater speed of attack.

This was the concept that she borrowed from her Void Zone ability, to utilise the void to invert and distort reality in all of its aspects, only this time she was limiting the effects to gravity alone.

Yet she had to manually do this for each and every effect that the general did with he domain alone. And their in lies the potential issue.

A domain was filled by the sovereigns will and intent. It was a powerful yet ephemeral thing that worked based upon the persons thoughts and intentions, it could be trained and used more actively but that was usually something that naturally happened as one advanced through tier 5, much like one was able to refine how their presence was utilised in tier 4.

But what that meant practically in this particular instance, was that the gravity domain was not a static force. No it was being filled and operated by a being considerably more powerful that Violet, as such she was forced to dedicate her entire being to shift the effects of the domain as the general only passively resisted her attempts.

Yet whilst it was incredibly mentally taxing for her, the effects it was having on the battle as a whole was more than worth the effort on her end.

The nearly dozen beasts surrounding the general had all reacted near instantly when the runic array came into effect. Suddenly their attacks were not being blocked or weakened by the gravity barrier, instead they seemed to be being aided by it to attack the human instead.

They unleashed everything they had. Powerful and mana intensive skills flaired up as they fought desperately to take down the seemingly invincible foe before them.

Condensed beams of pure light lanced out, no longer being refracted by intense gravity distortions to punch a hole through the man’s mace arm.

Wind blades tore through the heavy metal plate armour and drew blood. Fire engulfed parts of his body, the temperature burning the flesh underneath.

A dozen more such attacks were launched and landed on the momentarily stunned sovereign.

A vicious grin appearing in their faces as blood was finally spilt.

Luna too activated one of her most powerful skills, one that she had refrained from using all day given the vast mana it utilised to activate.

She activated Arctic wrath.

Her pseudo domain of Arctic manifestation seemed to resonate with the skill. The world around them turning into a true Arctic hellscape. The ground froze over and this time it stayed frozen as layers upon layers of frost spread out around her.

The cold did not bother her allies, its wrath being directly solely towards the sovereign before her.

Chains of ice sprouted from the ground below his feet, attempting to bind him to the floor, they shattered almost instantly but more and more chains of ice formed faster and faster.

Then lances and spears of ice materialised in the air around the human general. Each one shooting towards him with remarkable speed.

Then bolts of ice formed and shot towards him. Then weapons of ice manifested around her foe, from hammers to swords to maces and more.

Each one acting independently to strike down on the beleaguered sovereign with cruel precision.

Blood sprayed out as the barrage of magical and physical attacks entirely overwhelmed the stunned general as he fought desperately to understand why his domain was failing him in this crucial moment.

All the while pain assaulted the warrior, to the level that a pained cry escaped his lips as he buckled under the unforgiving onslaught.

The explosions of magic lasted for several long seconds, explosions ringing out and mixing with the cries of pain from within the area of devastation centered around the general.

Then the attacks stoppped. Revealing the broken and bloody body of the human sovereign, yet he still stood straight, even with dozens of projectiles hitting out of his body coupled with small rivers of blood flowing down his broken body.

He glared defiantly out at the surrounding beasts that were all now panting in exhaustion with their mana entirely spent from the onslaught.

He let out a pained and slightly maddened laugh as he took a single, halting step forwards. The pressure being emitted by him seemed to spike as he raised his bloody arm holding the mace high into the sky.

He took one more step before a large onyx claw slammed into him from above as Violet descended to the ground with Earth shattering force as she used the last of her mana to activate limit break.

Then once the explosion of dirt subsided a hollow solence enveloped the battlefield, only for a welcome notification appeared before all the beast lords eyes.
