Chapter 1753: Seizing a Slice of the Pie
While the Magus Civilization forces took a brief respite outside the subspace, Sein privately summoned Orric to meet with him.Gazing at the burly man with hair hanging loosely over his shoulders, Sein sighed and asked, “Do you know why I chose to advance toward the Shadowbat Civilization first, instead of returning to Marvelous Plane?”
“I don’t,” Orric replied in his deep, resonant voice.
Sein glanced at him. “I want you to understand the survival rules within the Magus Alliance through this matter. It’s rarely about loyalty first. More often than not, it’s about placing interests above everything else.”
Sein’s words made Orric frown slightly, as if a headache were coming on.
Scheming, political maneuvering, weighing pros and cons—none of these were Orric’s strengths. In fact, he had always resisted and disliked such things.
Thinking hard simply was not in Orric’s nature. He preferred to act directly, doing whatever felt right in the moment.
Rather than calculating gains and losses, Orric followed his instincts, seeking immediate satisfaction in both favors and grudges alike.
That way of living allowed him a sense of freedom, but it also placed him in danger more than once.
Orven’s usurpation was the clearest example.
Now that Orric had joined the Magus Alliance, navigating its circles, seeking backing, and securing benefits for his home civilization would require far more thought and calculation.
No one would protect him unconditionally forever—not even Sein.
