Qiao Xiaomai was not the least bit polite with Bei Yun. She picked a few rooms nearest to her courtyard to store the gold and silver. Over the next few days, even though the maids helped with some of the chores and all she had to do was focus on cooking, she was still as busy as a spinning top. Even Bei Yun had to go to the kitchen if he wanted to see her.
On this particular day, the day before Bei Yun was set to depart, he once again appeared at the doorway of Qiao Xiaomai’s courtyard kitchen. Glancing at the maids standing outside the courtyard, he clicked his tongue and said, "Now the people of Longshi Country have completely realized your worth."
"Even after I leave, considering your immense value, they probably won’t dare do anything to you, right?"
"Nonsense! No one else has your kind of decency." Qiao Xiaomai, who was flipping Braised Pork in the wok, turned her head at his words and glared at him.
"Decency?" Bei Yun sounded as if he’d just heard the most absurd joke in the world. He wanted to laugh, but remembering the poison in his body, he had to stifle it. Pointing to his own nose, he asked, "Me? Decent?"
"Yes, with ’beastly’ trailing right behind," Qiao Xiaomai added.
This time, Bei Yun could no longer hold back. He let out a hearty laugh, though it only lasted for a few beats. After laughing briefly, his expression turned blank. Raising a hand, he rubbed his face, trying to suppress the overwhelming joy, and said, "Thanks for the compliment."
"You’re the pick of the litter among the beasts. At least you still have some trace of humanity on you," Qiao Xiaomai snorted twice.
"I’ll just pretend you’re praising me," Bei Yun said, raising his hand to rub his face again as if trying to steady himself.
Clearing his throat with a couple of coughs, he spoke again, "If you’re really planning to go tomorrow, then I’ll take you myself."
"Really?!" Upon hearing this, Qiao Xiaomai immediately spun around excitedly.
