Chapter 295 - 281 Lord Returns to Five (Wine and Women)
The autumn wind swept through the streets at night, leaving them cold and desolate.
But the small shop’s business was just starting, bustling with lively energy.
Most of the men gathered in groups of three or five around a table, some playing Mahjong in secret, drinking while they played, accompanied by some peanuts and dishes to go with the alcohol. Truly, they looked carefree and indulgent.
However, at a table near the roadside, there were only two people.
The owner brought over another bottle of liquor.
The handsome man had been drinking several bottles already, while the girl passing by seemed to know him. She simply sat there quietly, watching him drink.
"Jinghuai, it’s getting late. Stop drinking," Shui Lian said softly, with a trace of sweetness in her tone. "Drinking too much is bad for your health."
Shui Lian felt that she had always been pampered by fate. Her luck was extraordinary.
Back then, when she was just wondering how to spoil Xu Yiyuan’s impression of Tian Sangsang, fate let her coincidentally meet Xu Xixi by the riverside; when she casually wandered into the woods, she stumbled upon an injured Jiang Jinghuai. Although at the time she hadn’t thought much about any future connection with Jiang Jinghuai, now she couldn’t be more grateful; she only accompanied the canteen procurement lady for a walk, and she caught sight of Tian Sangsang secretly meeting a younger man; and today, she merely stepped out the door and encountered a drunken Jiang Jinghuai.
They say it’s all about fate, and that couldn’t be more true.
Jiang Jinghuai lifted his blurry drunken gaze to glance at her, then took another swig of liquor without saying a word.
He was drinking hurriedly, and the liquor dripped down from his chin, sliding sluggishly along his Adam’s apple.
He had always been stern and unyielding, but now, drunk, he looked like a wounded child—melancholic, despondent, sorrowful—making others instinctively want to take care of him.
Shui Lian stared at him, lost in thought, silently musing in her heart.
"You really shouldn’t drink anymore. It’s so late; isn’t it an issue if you don’t go home? Sangsang is still waiting for you at home..." She bit her lip lightly, testing the waters.
Jiang Jinghuai’s voice, tinged with drunkenness, said, "Don’t mention her to me."
Shui Lian felt smug. Something must have happened between them.
She pressed on, "Did you perhaps overhear some unpleasant remarks...? Maybe people were just spreading baseless gossip. I believe Sangsang isn’t that kind of person."
"Shui Lian." Jiang Jinghuai rubbed his temples, looking at her with exhaustion. "Leave. I want to be alone."
Shui Lian felt a pang of grievance, her eyes reddening instantly. "Fine, I won’t speak. If you don’t like hearing it, I won’t say it. But I can’t go back—I’m worried about you."
Jiang Jinghuai abruptly stood up, his figure swaying slightly as he leaned one hand against the table. His tall silhouette was bathed in the dim glow of the streetlamp.
"Then I’ll leave." He placed money on the table in passing.
"Jinghuai!" Shui Lian chased after him in disbelief, reaching out to support him, one hand wrapping around his waist. She whispered softly, "You’re drunk."
When her hand wrapped around his waist, Jiang Jinghuai’s gaze darkened, his body stiffening instinctively in rejection.
He stopped in his tracks, slowly tilting his head to glance at her.
Under the streetlamp’s glow, this woman wore an expression filled with passionate admiration, her eyes brimming with infatuation, no longer carrying the intellectual and graceful demeanor she held before.
His eyes no longer had the drunken haze from earlier; instead, they gradually sharpened with sobriety.
Surrounded by the scent of alcohol, Shui Lian summoned her courage, moving her hand to his chest, looking up at him pitifully as she asked in a soft voice, "Come to my place, okay?"
Jiang Jinghuai stared at her deeply for a moment, then let four words escape his thin lips, "Know your limits."
Shui Lian could hardly believe what she’d heard. Know your limits. Why should she know her limits? Could it be that he didn’t like her? Refusing to let go, she gazed at him with tearful, moist eyes.
"Shui Lian." Jiang Jinghuai’s face grew cold, his voice low and tinged with warning. "I won’t say the same thing twice."
This side of Jiang Jinghuai made her fearful, yet she couldn’t bring herself to release her grip. She desperately wanted to be embraced by him, fiercely loved.
Why was it that one after another—Xu Yiyuan didn’t like her, Jiang Jinghuai didn’t like her—yet they all liked that Tian Sangsang?!
Once upon a time, Tian Sangsang was so repulsive in appearance, but they didn’t mind at all...
"Don’t touch me again." Jiang Jinghuai slowly removed her hand and shook it off. His strength wasn’t forceful, yet Shui Lian felt as if her entire hand had shattered from the impact.
"And another thing—don’t tell anyone I arranged for you to join the military."
"Remember, no one could arrange for you to join the military. You got in on your own merit."
"I only helped you casually. I have no intention toward you, so don’t misunderstand."
Each word, sharp and cutting, felt like stabbing straight into her heart. Shui Lian had never thought Jiang Jinghuai could be so cruel in his speech, especially toward a woman.
She stood there dumbfounded, heartbroken. It was over. Tonight, she clearly understood that from now on, there would only be estrangement between her and Jiang Jinghuai.
They say when a woman goes cold, not even ten oxen could pull her back.
But for a man, when his heart and eyes don’t include you, how frightening is that?
She wouldn’t let go. She wouldn’t let Tian Sangsang have her way!
Otherwise, she wouldn’t be Shui Lian!
**
The lights in his home had already gone out. Jiang Jinghuai stood downstairs, blowing in the night wind for half an hour, his head aching terribly.
He sighed in disappointment, stumbling his way toward Fang Tongzhou’s dormitory.
"Captain!" Several soldiers in the dormitory saw him and quickly got out of bed to salute!
"Don’t mind me. Go back to sleep."
The soldiers exchanged glances, but how could they dare? The captain was still here. How could they simply go to bed?
"That’s an order," Jiang Jinghuai said sternly.
Startled, they hurriedly climbed back into their bunks, leaving only Fang Tongzhou behind.
"I gotta say, you haven’t touched alcohol in ages, right? What’s the occasion today to get yourself so wasted?" Fang Tongzhou handed him a clean towel. "You even ended up in the wrong room."
Having just returned from a mission, the military gave them three days off. Shouldn’t he be reconnecting with his wife? They said short separations were sweeter than a honeymoon. Yet he went off drinking instead!
"I’m staying here for the night."
What? Staying here? So it wasn’t because he was too drunk to realize it was the wrong room?
Fang Tongzhou froze in shock. "Does your wife know about this?" He looked again at their handsome captain, seeing fingerprints on his left cheek. Did his wife slap him?
Inwardly, Fang Tongzhou couldn’t help but admire her. His wife must be fierce! She even dared to slap the captain and kick him out!
Impressive! Hats off to the wife!
"So you’re having a fight with your wife, huh? That slap must’ve been heavy-handed!" he teased cheekily.
"Who said she slapped me?" Jiang Jinghuai gave him a sidelong glance, speaking drunkenly in denial. "She wouldn’t dare slap me. Tongzhou, let me tell you—at home, she listens to me. I tell her to go east, and she doesn’t dare go west... If she dares rebel, just ignore her for a night, and she’ll straighten up."
Oh, really? Captain, that desperate expression of yours already exposes the truth. We all know what kind of person your wife is—the kind who belts out "Hero Song" in karaoke!
Fang Tongzhou chuckled. "Alright, alright. Captain, you’re the boss. Just don’t mind how coarse my bedding is. Makes me think about the first time we bunked together—that was five or six years ago..."
Jiang Jinghuai shoved his face away, his gaze turning icy. "Shut up. I don’t want your ’first time.’"
Whoa... Fang Tongzhou stood dumbfounded. What was this supposed to mean? Why did it sound suggestive? Captain’s been truly stifled by his wife, hasn’t he?
