"Why do you mix sand in for frying?" Wang Ting had never seen this and found it very intriguing.
"Because sand is granular, it can get very hot once heated. It prevents the melon seeds from sticking to the bottom of the pot and burning, while also ensuring that all the seeds in the pot are heated evenly. So even the ones that aren’t directly being fried will still be cooked!" Pei Qin explained to him.
Wang Ting nodded, enlightened by her teaching; Pei Qin knew so much. He then asked, "Are peanuts fried the same way?"
"Right!" Pei Qin nodded. "You’re really smart! You know how to apply one concept to another!"
She praised the boy easily and with such enthusiasm that it made the praised feel overjoyed. Zhang Yan couldn’t help but smile when he saw Wang Ting’s eyes gleaming with happiness as he watched her fry the seeds.
That smile, when it fell into Sun Xiujin’s eyes, was incredibly jarring. She was about to be married, bound to marry a poor scholar, and she felt somewhat disdainful of his family. Yet Pei Qin was picking and choosing amongst several attractive options.
Intense jealousy and rage left Sun Xiujin feeling suffocated.
The freshly fried melon seeds were a hit with everyone because Pei Qin had added tea leaves to the fry, giving the seeds a Longjing tea flavor.
