Pei Wendong knew his words were of no use and followed Pei Qin out with a sullen air.
Pei Qin thought he didn’t have contact with other children, and whenever he did, it was always associated with unpleasant memories, casting a shadow in his heart. She cajoled him a bit more and the next day sent him to school.
As she left with a smile and a wave of her hand, Pei Wendong’s spirits sank. He was now of no help and was even costing them more silver.
Teacher Sun was also aware of the siblings’ past ordeals, instructed him to study hard and get along with his classmates and paid extra attention to him, noting the boy was bright—it just remained to be seen how much he could learn.
Only three people were left at the noodle stall, so Grandma Sun came over to help out.
"Grandma Sun! It’s less busy at noon; we can manage. You go home and take care of your business!" Pei Qin told her to go home.
Lady Zou had just finished her confinement, but now had to take care of an additional baby at home. With Sun Tiezhu and Zou Xing busy with their work, some of the more laborious tasks fell on Grandma Sun.
Pei Qin urged her several times, and seeing that they really could manage, Grandma Sun eventually went home, saying, "I’ll come to help when it’s market day!" They would certainly be too busy to manage on their own when market day came.
"Good! We’ll have to call for you if you don’t come!" Pei Qin unceremoniously agreed.
After a busy day, they closed the stall in the afternoon and hurried home for a brief rest before starting to peel peanuts.
On market day, Pei Qin didn’t socialize much; she packed up as soon as they sold out and rushed the caramelized peanuts, which she had prepared the day before, to the county town. Upon return, she didn’t even have time for a meal but gnawed on two meat pastries and drank a bowl of tea before hurrying off to Back Mountain Village with Pei Yuan.
