Love After Divorce: Her Second Chance

Chapter 165; Lay them there

The maid, already busy at the stove, glanced at her and offered a small, knowing nod. Fang Lin returned it with a strained smile, slipping into the routine of chopping, stirring, and arranging ingredients.

Each motion required focus, and for the first time in what felt like hours, she let the mundane tasks absorb her, keeping her mind from spiraling back to Yueyao’s fragile state.

She forced herself to speak in measured tones, giving simple instructions and asking polite questions, all while her heart still pounded under the surface.

Inside, her thoughts raced, replaying the psychologist’s warnings, the careful balance Jin Shuren maintained, the scent that had calmed Yueyao, and the weight of responsibility she now carried.

Yet, amid the chopping and stirring of vegetables, a small measure of calm began to seep in. The kitchen, with its ordinary smells and steady routine, offered a temporary refuge from the tension in the bedrooms above. Fang Lin exhaled slowly, trying to straighten her posture and smooth the tension from her shoulders.

She would act normal, she told herself firmly. For Yueyao’s sake. For Yueqin’s. For the fragile world that now depended on restraint, vigilance, and patience. And as she worked, she quietly hoped that, with careful attention and time, peace could be preserved, at least for now.

While Jin Shuren, who was seated at the desk, immediately instructed Jin Zhou on what to do.... "Make the arrangements," Jin Shuren said, his tone calm but commanding. "Everything I have kept in the other guest room, bring it here, to the master bedroom. Every item that belongs to Yueyao or Yueqin, let the maids arrange them..."

Jin Zhou nodded, taking notes and already picturing the task. "Yes, sir."

Jin Shuren continued, his voice softer now, almost contemplative. "Whenever I bought Yueqin a dress, I also bought one for Yueyao. I want them both here. When she wakes... she should feel the life she has not yet remembered, surrounding her in a way that feels safe and familiar."

He paused, glancing toward the faint sunlight filtering through the blinds. "And the single portraits of her. Everyone I have stored... hang them along the walls. Every corner she looks, she should feel... at peace. Every object, every image, a thread tying her back to herself without forcing it."

Jin Zhou made a swift bow, already moving to carry out the orders, but not before Jin Shuren added one last instruction.

"Arrange everything with care, as though the room itself is breathing around her. When she wakes, she should not feel the absence of time, only the quiet assurance that she is home."

Jin Shuren remained standing, hands clasped behind his back, his gaze distant yet focused. Every decision he made was deliberate, precise, a meticulous design to protect the fragile world Yueyao inhabited, and to give her the peace he knew she deserved, even if the rest of the world remained cruel and unpredictable.

Jin Zhou moved quickly, barking quiet instructions to the maids and staff as they descended into the underground storerooms.

One by one, delicate boxes were carried up the stairs, each labeled with care: dresses, toys, mementos, and the single portraits Jin Shuren had privately collected over the years.

Every item was chosen not only for its beauty but for the memory it might evoke in Yueyao, a gentle nudge toward familiarity without forcing recognition.

Jin Shuren watched from the desk, hands still clasped behind his back, his posture perfectly composed, yet his eyes betrayed a quiet tension.

He paused only when a box of dresses arrived, soft fabrics folded meticulously, the faint scent of lavender he had applied lingering even now. He inspected them briefly, running his fingers lightly over the hems, imagining Yueyao’s small hands brushing the material, imagining the comfort it might bring her.

"Lay them here," he instructed softly, pointing toward the master bedroom. "Do not rush it. Every fold, every placement matters. She must occupy a room that embraces her, not overwhelms her."

As the staff worked, Jin Shuren moved over to the master bedroom at the wardrobe, selecting a few of the garments he had long hoped she would one day wear.

He handled them as though he was holding some fragile glass, each piece a symbol of his care, each stitch infused with his silent wish for her well-being.

The portraits were next. Jin Zhou and two maids carried the framed images carefully, the glass glinting in the soft afternoon light.

Jin Shuren directed their placement with the precision of a strategist, on walls that caught the light, at angles that would greet her gaze wherever she looked.

Each image told a fragment of her life, her beauty and strength preserved, reminders of the woman she was beneath the fractures.

Finally, Jin Shuren stepped back, surveying the room. The air was quiet, the space now a sanctuary of memory, scent, and subtle reassurance.

He allowed himself a rare moment to breathe, to imagine her waking and feeling a gentle familiarity, a tether to herself that required no explanations, no abrupt truths.

He went down the stairs, glanced toward the guest room door where Yueyao slept, wrapped in his coat, and a faint crease of concern crossed his brow.

The peace she carried now was delicate, fragile, but it was enough, for the moment. His mind already began cataloging every detail, every possible precaution, knowing that tomorrow, every small step would matter in preserving the equilibrium he had painstakingly constructed.

Then, with measured calm, Jin Shuren returned to the desk, reviewing lists, adjusting schedules, and giving further instructions.

Every movement, every decision, was deliberate. He was not just preparing a room; he was preparing a world, one in which Yueyao could remain whole, even if only for a fragile span of time, until her mind could begin to reconcile with the truths she had buried.

Outside, Fang Lin chopped vegetables, the mundane rhythm grounding her, yet her thoughts drifted to the master bedroom.

She imagined the careful arrangement....
