Chapter 329: Heard About
Later in the evening, other sisters and their husbands also arrived, making the house and the yard even livelier.
Indeed, just like the song goes, these sisters and brothers-in-law arrived with a chicken in the left hand, a duck in the right, and half a sack of grain on their backs.
"It’s good that you came, but why bring so much stuff? This must be for keeping your grandchildren well-fed."
"This is to show respect to you elders. We had a good harvest this year, sold the grain, and can finally have a good New Year."
After exchanging a few words with their parents and elders, they rolled up their sleeves and prepared to get to work.
Inevitably, the children started discussing the events of the previous night. With many people around, their collective anger grew, as they spoke about finding the person responsible for ruining the New Year celebration by cursing their household with bad luck.
Yang PeiMin didn’t want the New Year’s atmosphere to be ruined by these issues, so she suggested to everyone that since they were all together, they could set up a couple of stoves in the yard for a barbecue, which would be both convenient and facilitate conversation.
Everyone was immediately interested, "How do we do that?"
Perhaps some had heard about it, but it was rare for their own families to do so.
Since they had the raw materials, like corn, cabbage, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and skewered mutton, they would have the older children shave some bamboo sticks for skewering. As for the spices, they had chili powder, chili paste, soybean paste, fennel, star anise, and Sichuan peppercorns at home, which they could grind into a powder for marinating the meat. Lastly, they just needed to find a couple of iron racks to place the skewers on for grilling.
