Chapter 343 - 339: Pain That Penetrates to the Bone (Part 1)
Hearing his voice, inexplicably, her eyes felt sore, and she had an urge to cry.
"I went to the hospital to see my dad." Her voice was somewhat unusual, and Asher Land thought she was down because of her dad’s illness, so he didn’t plan to say anything further.
"Do you want me to come pick you up?"
"Oh, no need, I’ll be back soon."
"Okay, then. It’s snowing, so drive safely," he advised her before hanging up.
Sophie Smith put away the phone and just when she was about to start the car, it stalled. She was puzzled, as it happened twice in a row, not knowing what the problem was.
With no other choice, she called him.
"I think you should come and pick me up after all."

She turned her head toward the window; a bustling crowd moved around, and she actually wanted to go for a walk. Since entering the entertainment industry, she rarely lived like a regular person.
She remembered the university days when Eva Miller would drag her out every night for late-night snacks and singing. Back then, she felt a bit heartache because it cost money, but Eva said money doesn’t come with life or death, as long as you’re happy.
Listening to her ’wisdom,’ Sophie found it amusing back then, but now looking back, that period was almost one of the most beautiful times in her life—carefree and able to live freely.
But now? The farther she goes, the more complicated and painful life becomes.
She missed the simple self she once was.
She closed her eyes, leaning on the steering wheel, a tear slid down unknowingly, and then more followed, like a breached dam, uncontrollable.
She didn’t know how long she cried until she had no energy left, only hearing the sound of the car window being tapped. Startled, she looked up and saw Asher Land gazing at her with a worried expression.
She tried to compose herself, calm her emotions, and only after a few seconds did she step out of the car.
"What’s wrong?" Her eyes were red, and he could easily tell something was off.
"You came pretty quickly." She dodged the question, "Let’s go back."
She sat in the passenger seat, not daring to look directly at him.
Seeing her in a bad mood, Asher didn’t want to ask much. He started the car and headed towards the Land Family home.

Back at the Land Family residence, Nanny Garcia had already instructed the servants to prepare dinner. She sat by the dining table, waiting for Asher Land to come downstairs after changing clothes to eat.
But after waiting a long time, he still hadn’t come down.
"Miss Smith, you should eat first. Young Master said he doesn’t want to have dinner tonight."
"Why?"
"I don’t know either. Young Master’s been in a bad state today. He fell asleep in the study while working, slept for a long time, and then went a long way to pick you up, Miss Smith. I think he might be tired," the maid replied honestly.
Sophie felt a sudden shock in her heart, thinking it might be the side effects of the sleeping pills; she had indeed put quite a dose in his coffee today...
She pulled out the chair and hurried upstairs.
When she pushed open the master bedroom door, the noise was quite loud. Normally, he would have noticed, but today, he showed no reaction at all.
She approached the bed, crouched down, and gently stroked his sharp facial features with her small hand.
She supported her head with both hands, staring emptily at his sleeping face.
"I wish this was all a dream. I wish I had never betrayed you..."
