Chapter 2398 - 669: Surgery, Edith Poisoned
An Yiqing felt warmth in her heart. Regardless of their current relationship, she was truly touched by Old Arthur’s attentiveness. Her smile became more sincere, and she gave Old Arthur a warm smile as she glanced at him.
"Grandpa Arthur, how is your health recently? It seems like your complexion is much better than that day."
Mike put down his knife and fork and sighed, "This has been an old ailment for me. Early last year, the doctors sentenced me to death. They said my body couldn’t handle much more strain and I wouldn’t live more than two years. At that time, I thought to myself, since I’m going to die anyway, I might as well enjoy the last bit of my life. Who knew that just a few days ago, you saved my life. Doctor Stephen said if it weren’t for your remarkable medical arts, he wouldn’t have been able to save me either. Xiao Qing, I really thank you."
The words of a dying man are often kind. Having walked through hell, Mike had come to terms with many things, and his mindset became more peaceful.
"Grandpa Arthur’s fate is not to have ended, I just did my best."
However, Mike didn’t see it that way. He had asked his family doctor, and An Yiqing’s medical arts were beyond imagination.
"Actually, besides thanking you today for saving me, I have another request." He thought for a moment, "Xiao Qing, could you become my family doctor and help prolong my life for a few years?"
An Yiqing remained impassive; she was not surprised by Mike’s request.
"Grandpa Arthur, do you really wish to live to a ripe old age?"
Mike shook his head, "I’m already over seventy, I’ve come to terms with death a long time ago. But there are still some things I’ve left unfinished. Xiao Qing, you must have heard of the Stausauser Family. In recent years, as my health has declined, the infighting within the family has escalated. My youngest son is my chosen heir, but his situation is very dangerous right now. So, I want to live to see him safely assume the position of family head. That way, I could die in peace."
"You really love your youngest son?" If she remembered correctly, Mike Stausauser had two sons and a daughter in total.
"Yes, I love him very much." Mike nodded, a hint of sorrow in his eyes, "My first wife and I were in an arranged marriage. We respected each other, but it wasn’t what you would call happiness. She bore me a son and a daughter, and fifteen years later, she died of illness. Later, when I was forty-eight, I met my second wife, who is the mother of my youngest son, Lanni. She was a vibrant and passionate journalist, and we met at a banquet. I fell in love with her at first sight. Later, we married and had Lanni. But, after a few years, my wife died in a car accident, leaving behind Lanni, who was only seven."
From Mike’s words, An Yiqing learned that his second wife was a very optimistic and cheerful person and was very good to the two children left by Mike’s first wife. However, the family of the first wife, the Josephine Family, was always worried that Lanni would take over the Stausauser Family’s position as clan leader, so they took it upon themselves to take those two children back and prevent them from contacting Lanni and his mother.
Naturally, Mike refused, but his former father-in-law brought up his first wife, saying that the two children needed the love of their grandmother since they didn’t have a mother. Mike reluctantly agreed and thought the children needed their grandmother’s care. He made an agreement with the Josephine Family to let those two children live there for half a year and then come back for the other half.
The two children were at the age of fifteen or sixteen, and any slight oversight could lead to psychological problems. Under the extreme education of the Josephine Family, the two children became selfish and cold-hearted. When Mike took them back, it was already too late.
Mike was very remorseful and deeply regretted it. He insisted on taking his eldest son and daughter back home to educate them personally, but he was too busy to spend much time with them. Over time, the two children’s personalities became more willful and arrogant. They only valued the rights and status taught by their grandmother and completely ignored their father’s love for them.
They caused countless minor accidents to try to injure Lanni, attempting to drive him out of the house. However, Lanni had always been very good-tempered, and even when injured, he would remain silent and avoid them as much as possible. Later, when those two children became adults and gained their own power, they became even more aggressive towards Lanni, with some incidents nearly resulting in fatalities.
