Alora Craig came to China specifically to seek out her enemy, Angel. Yes, Angel had become her enemy because Angel had humiliated her.
The reason she knew Angel was in China was through her deductions and reasoning. Maurice and Angel had disappeared together, but Maurice’s family had all come to China. Although they didn’t immigrate and claimed to be only accompanying their children to school, the timing didn’t add up.
Another clue was that Alora had found the teahouse in Chinatown. Based on the statements from several Tea Artists there, their boss was a Chinese person. She concluded that Angel must be a Chinese person and might have even sneaked back into the country. Thus, finding Maurice’s family would likely lead her to Angel soon.
She had been demoted to an ordinary agent, and this trip to China was under the guise of personal travel. She was on extended leave; her superiors were annoyed and had told her to take some time off, which was, in effect, an indirect transfer of power.
The CIA is very cautious about firing agents because they all possess certain secrets. If someone were to be fired and then harbor resentment, they might leak the CIA’s secrets, which had happened many times before.
But Alora had just made a mistake, shown poor performance, and hadn’t reached the grounds for dismissal. So, giving her a long vacation was necessary, as the CIA would train commanders like her again.
Alora came to the capital city because her investigation indicated that Maurice’s younger daughter was studying there, and his wife and older daughter’s destination in China was also the capital city.
What Alora did not know was that Maurice’s wife and older daughter had only set their initial destination as the capital but had then moved on to Wuhan, which was Maurice’s clever tactic.
