Book 9: Chapter 38: The War Deepens
“Lancelot, Knight of the Round Table…” Qin Lun slightly frowned.
He had read many books while in prison, including legendary ancient texts. Lancelot was said to be the first Knight of the Round Table under King Arthur. He was elegant, brave, and skilled in battle. He was the son of the King of France and the eighth descendant of Jesus Christ.
His affair with Queen Guinevere caused a split among the Knights of the Round Table. King Arthur launched an expedition to France over this, which led to another Knight of the Round Table, Mordred—also Arthur’s illegitimate son—to rebel and usurp the throne. Finally, King Arthur and Mordred killed each other in the Battle of Camlann.
For his own selfish desires, Lancelot not only betrayed King Arthur but also killed several of his fellow Knights of the Round Table—comrades he had once faced life and death with. From a moral standpoint, his actions were even worse than Judas’s.
After the war, Queen Guinevere became a nun, sincerely repenting for her actions. Lancelot wanted to salvage their ill-fated relationship, but the queen said it was because of them that the Round Table was destroyed. Lancelot agreed with her view. Ashamed, he returned to his territory, lived in seclusion, and became an Ascetic Monk. They never saw each other again until death.
Lancelot’s experiences as a Knight of the Round Table were widely known, but that wasn’t Qin Lun’s main focus. He paid more attention to another story about Lancelot.
Legend said that after King Arthur became the Eternal King of Britain, he wanted to find the Holy Grail, one of the Christian Relics. Lancelot, as the first Knight of the Round Table, accepted this mission. However, later rumors claimed he failed to complete the task because of his affair with the queen.
The one who finally held up the Holy Grail was his son with Irene, the ninth descendant of Jesus Christ, another Knight of the Round Table—Galahad.
Legends were just legends. Apart from those involved, their authenticity could not be confirmed. If the Ascetic Monk on the helicopter was truly Lancelot, having undergone multiple reincarnations, and if he possessed a Relic, it might very well be the Holy Grail.
It was important to know that in legend, the Holy Grail was a Christian Relic that could grant humans rejuvenation and eternal life. This closely matched the situation detected by the Queen of Sandstorm.
“Gerthard…” Seeing Qin Lun’s face change unpredictably, Monica worriedly held the young man’s arm.
“Monica, you should go back to the Zeppelin battleship first!” Qin Lun’s eyes flickered, and he smiled as he patted the woman’s small hand.
“Since you’ve decided, how could I not accompany you!” The Queen of Sandstorm sighed, a trace of tenderness appearing on her face. “I know Lancelot’s strength very well. You alone are no match for him. I’ll go with you, at least…”
“Heh, don’t underestimate your man. Without fighting, it’s hard to say who will win!” Qin Lun pressed a finger against the woman’s red lips, a strange smile curling at the corner of his mouth. “Besides, we don’t necessarily have to fight the enemy head-on.”
Qin Lun turned and looked at the flaming hellscape that was London city behind them, murmuring softly, “No matter how strong you are, what does it matter? Tonight, London is filled with countless powerful beings. In the great battle, even the first Knight of the Round Table is just a slightly stronger ant.”
…
“Grant, where are you?” Qin Lun asked quietly in the Team Channel.
“Qin Lun? Are you in trouble?” After a long moment, the Team Channel transmitted the Joker’s slightly heavy breathing, as if he had just finished a fight.
“No, I’ve obtained important intelligence and want to change our original plan!” Qin Lun explained the information about Lancelot and the Relic in the simplest terms.
“Knight of the Round Table? A Relic?” Joker Grant did not hide his surprise. “You really…”
“Interested?” Qin Lun chuckled softly.
“Interested, yes, I generally understand what you mean. But even if we can fish in troubled waters, the chance of getting something like that is very small, right?” Grant said thoughtfully. “Don’t forget, the Avengers Alliance and the Grimm Academy hate you the most. There are many smart people too; it’s not easy to use them!”
Qin Lun nodded slightly. Grant’s thinking was sensible. Hunting low-level Reincarnators here was low risk with good rewards. Going to that big free-for-all was high risk, and they might not even get any loot. However, since he had contacted Grant, he had reasons to persuade him.
“Heh, I originally thought so too. But I just saw a familiar person near Lancelot…” Qin Lun couldn’t help but laugh. “With such a good inside contact, shouldn’t you have a bit more confidence?”
“No way? That’s quite a coincidence!” Grant also couldn’t help laughing, but after thinking for a moment, he still shook his head. “The risk is too great. It’s not worth it!”
“What if I said that the Relic is most likely the Holy Grail?” Qin Lun smirked and said lightly. “That thing, in legend, can rejuvenate and grant eternal life to ordinary humans. It’s clearly an item that boosts vitality. Isn’t it perfect for your Virus Bloodline?”
“…You’d let me have it?” Grant’s voice paused, asking hesitantly.
“You should know that thing isn’t to my taste. If it’s the Holy Grail, it’s yours. Just let me have the rest of the loot. If it’s not the Holy Grail, then we distribute according to need. What do you think?” Qin Lun blinked, speaking cunningly.
“Alright, you’ve convinced me. This is clearly a fire pit, but I’ll jump in with you once!” Grant sighed helplessly with a bitter smile.
“Heh, it’s not that bad. At least we still have a trump card! That person might not be able to influence much normally, but in tonight’s London, the Vatican Crusaders are already on the opposite side of the Allied Forces. Just a little spark will turn it into a huge melee!”
A smile appeared on Qin Lun’s face. “That fat guy is truly formidable. Even without us Apostles and Reincarnators, after tonight’s battle, the Superhuman organizations of the Allied Forces will no longer be a solid block!”
“Should we call Lace back? That trio’s combination seemed pretty good,” Grant asked lightly.
“Forget it. That girl isn’t stupid. She definitely won’t agree to be cannon fodder.” Qin Lun smiled and refused Grant’s suggestion. “With their strength, it’s hard for them to intervene in a battle of this level. If they really die here, it would be hard to explain to ‘Lost’.”
“Alright then. Where are you now? I’ll come meet up. Let the Queen of Sandstorm give me a lift!” Once decided, Grant actually seemed a bit impatient.
“I had Monica hijack a Crusader helicopter. Mark your location in the Team Channel, and we’ll come pick you up!” Qin Lun leaned out of the cockpit, squinting as he surveyed the war-torn city. The strong wind whipped his open military collar, making it flap loudly.
The sand whirlwind was too slow. Besides, there might be tough battles ahead, so the three of them needed to conserve their strength as much as possible. Right now, the night sky was full of armed helicopters from both sides. With the Queen of Sandstorm making a move, hijacking a helicopter was easy.
After ending the call, Qin Lun leaned back in the helicopter seat, lost in thought. The complete change in combat objective forced him to reconsider their retreat. Both he and Grant understood that the target was just the target; they might not actually manage to seize the Relic.
However, the area where Alucard was located would likely concentrate most of the top-tier Superhumans. Killing any one of them would probably yield huge benefits, far greater than the loot from a few low-level Reincarnators.
Although this world was a Low Magic World, the top experts from the Avengers Alliance and the Grimm Academy were not inferior to Second Order, or even High-Rank Apostles. Currently, the London battlefield was very chaotic, with various factions fighting in a jumbled mess.
But the most intense fighting was still in North London, the area where the HELLSING organization and Alucard were located. Earlier, after the HELLSING organization freed Alucard’s true form, that place would definitely replace inner London, becoming the new battlefield center and meat grinder.
If the Superhuman organizations of the Allied Forces, like the Avengers Alliance and the Grimm Academy, had been somewhat inclined toward the British government and the HELLSING organization after the Vatican Crusaders’ invasion, now that they had seen the Undead Army enslaved by Alucard, the Superhuman experts within these organizations would surely waver.
Whether it was the Avengers Alliance or the Grimm Academy, these experts were all Superhumans with strong individuality. They weren’t soldiers; their thoughts and actions were governed by themselves, not by others’ orders. A massive melee, following an internal split, was unavoidable.
However, for the British people and the HELLSING organization, this was also a helpless move. Although the Allied Forces’ Superhuman organizations opposed the Crusaders’ invasion of Britain, expecting them to fight the Vatican Crusaders to the death was clearly unrealistic.
Only by freeing Alucard was there hope of driving out the Crusaders. After that, no matter how the other Allied Forces Superhumans viewed the HELLSING organization, no matter what situation Alucard would face, London was, after all, saved.
Thinking this, Qin Lun couldn’t help but smile knowingly, genuinely admiring the fat major on the Zeppelin battleship.
Inciting battles between Reincarnators and Apostles, making London’s chaos wider and deeper, but in reality, having little impact on the top experts led by Captain America and the Grimm Hunters—that was a victory at the tactical level.
But using some method to induce the Papal Chamber to launch the Ninth Crusade tonight, causing an ideological split among the Allied Forces’ Superhuman organizations, belonged to the strategic level of victory.
From initially not taking it seriously, to witnessing that blood-red light pillar illuminating the entire city with his own eyes, Qin Lun had to admit that the warmonger was strategically more clever than himself. His emphasis on Alucard was not without reason; that Vampire was indeed the golden key to escalating the war.
…
“Qin Lun, the situation here seems a bit different from what you described!” Looking at the chaotic scene before them, Grant and Qin Lun exchanged bitter smiles.
After more than twenty minutes of flight, they finally arrived from the city center to the North London district. But the fighting here was even more chaotic. The Papal Chamber’s Crusaders were now in a tough battle. Ancient Necro, including the Ottoman Janissaries and the Wallachian Knights, flooded the streets and alleys of North London like a tide.
Corpses lay everywhere, blood rivers converging into streams, and streets shattered from fighting. Whether it was the Avengers Alliance, the Grimm Academy, or even the Vatican’s Ascetic Monks like Lancelot, were hard to track down specifically, let alone try to fish in troubled waters.
“I thought I had already seen hell earlier, but it turns out this place is the real hell!” Grant sighed with an indifferent expression.
“Let’s go. I know where to find them!” Qin Lun glanced at the battlefield, a flicker of emotion passing through his calm eyes.
