Chapter 882: The Alpha Has Arrived
The right Mauler tried to retreat toward the barracks, perhaps instinctively returning to the den, but Liam did not allow it. He threw a small flame burst against the ground behind its feet, forcing it forward again, and Asher finished it with a driving thrust beneath the jaw that pinned its head back long enough for the flame along the blade to burn through the throat.
For a moment, the courtyard seemed to open.
Dead and dying Maulers lay across the stones, dark fluid spreading into cracks. Scorch marks traced the ground where Asher had angled flames low. Frost clung to joints, roots, and patches of broken road where Kara’s arrows had landed. Liam’s breathing was faster now, controlled but no longer effortless. He had spent more Myst than he wanted, not much in any single movement, but enough that the total sat clearly in his awareness. Small fire bursts, Shadow Sight, shared vision with Wing, weapon summoning, constant adjustments. It added up. Not dangerous yet, but noticeable.
Asher’s field uniform bore scorch marks and a smear of dark Mauler fluid across one sleeve. His longsword was wet with the same substance, blue flame still licking along the edge in a thin line. He looked alive in the worst way, grinning through hard breathing as if the fight had irritated and pleased him in equal measure.
Above them, Kara’s fingers trembled around her bowstring.
She had fired again and again, each shot purposeful, each one carrying just enough Ice Magic to reinforce, slow, or interrupt. Her breathing had grown uneven from the strain, but she remained at her post. When she reached for another arrow, Wing suddenly shifted above her.
Liam felt the warning half a second before Kara saw the movement.
One Mauler had broken away from the courtyard.
It had not charged Liam or Asher. It had noticed the arrows. With surprising determination, it slammed one claw into the inner wall and began climbing toward Kara, heavy claws tearing into old stone as its powerful arms hauled its body upward. Its back plating scraped against the wall, sending chips of stone down into the settlement. Kara froze for only a fraction of a second.
Then her face tightened.
"No," she whispered, though no one below could hear her clearly.
She drew and fired.
The first arrow struck the Mauler’s gripping hand. Ice burst across its claws and the stone beneath them, frosting the contact point. The creature snarled and tore the hand free, losing only a moment. It continued climbing. Kara backed along the parapet, not running, keeping her bow between herself and the creature.
Her second arrow struck its shoulder, frost spreading across the joint, slowing the next reach. The Mauler roared, jaws opening wide enough that she could see the dark wet throat behind its crushing teeth.
Her third arrow was already drawn.
Kara’s hands shook, but her eyes did not leave the weak point.
The Mauler lifted its head over the wall edge, one claw hooking into the parapet as it prepared to pull itself onto the walkway. Kara stepped forward instead of back, releasing the arrow at close range. The ice-reinforced tip drove into the throat fold beneath the jaw, angled upward into the open mouth. Ice bloomed inward, white-blue frost spreading through the soft tissue behind the jaw plates.
The Mauler convulsed.
Its frozen gripping hand slipped.
For one horrible second, it clawed at the parapet with its other arm, stone cracking beneath the force. Kara drew a short breath and kicked the iced hand with her boot, not hard enough to hurt it through armor, but enough to break the fragile grip frost had created.
The Mauler fell.
It struck the inner base of the wall with a heavy, wet crack and did not rise.
Kara stood above it, bow lowered slightly, fingers trembling harder now that the immediate danger had passed. She looked down at the body, then toward Liam and Asher below, as if only now realizing she had killed it herself.
Asher looked up and shouted, "Good. You are officially less useless than expected."
Kara’s mouth parted in disbelief. "Was that praise?"
"Do not get greedy."
Liam glanced up. "Stay focused. More may still be inside."
Kara swallowed, nodded, and lifted her bow again, though her hands still carried the tremor of adrenaline.
The fight continued, but the ordinary Maulers were losing ground now. Several lay dead across the courtyard. Two, badly wounded, retreated toward the den opening, one dragging a half-disabled leg, the other bleeding from a throat wound that had not finished it yet. Another collapsed near the storage house after Asher cut both its knees and Liam drove a dagger behind its jaw. The southern entry area had been pushed open. Not safe, not clear, but no longer blindly owned by the pack.
Liam stepped onto a raised stone near the courtyard edge, scanning the barracks, the storage house, the drainage openings, Kara’s wall position, and the street leading toward the southern gate. His breathing remained controlled, though the dull warmth in his channels told him he had used more than he wanted this early. Acceptable. Not ideal. A familiar category of annoyance.
Asher stood several paces away, longsword angled downward, dark fluid dripping from the tip. His chest rose and fell harder than Liam’s, but his eyes were still sharp. The blue flame along his blade had thinned to a faint edge, controlled rather than blazing.
"Area clear enough?" Asher asked.
"No."
"You always say that."
"Because people keep asking before it is true."
Before Asher could snap back, the Maulers changed.
The two wounded ones near the barracks stopped retreating in panic and lowered themselves close to the ground. Another shape inside the den opening shifted back instead of forward. The low growls that had filled the courtyard faded. The remaining ordinary Maulers drew closer to the broken barracks entrance, not fleeing, but making space. Mist moved through the courtyard in a slow curl, and for a moment even the ruined settlement seemed to quiet around them.
Wrong.
Liam felt it through Shadow Sight first.
The shadows around the old barracks tightened, not moving exactly, but compressing in the way darkness sometimes did around something heavier than the space expected. Wing reacted above, its smoke-edged wings flaring once before it climbed higher and angled away from the den. The shared sight flickered with a larger shape moving behind the broken doorway, too broad for the ordinary Maulers, too slow to be injured panic.
Asher felt it differently.
His grin faded. His stance lowered. The battle instinct that made him reckless in speech and sharp in combat recognized the pressure of a stronger enemy entering the field. He did not need a guide entry or shadow sight to understand when a fight had not reached its true center yet.
From the den-like opening near the barracks, the Alpha Mauler stepped out.
It was nearly half again the size of the others, its hunched back scraping the broken lintel as it emerged. Heavy bone-like growths formed a jagged crown across its skull and shoulders, ridging down its spine in cracked plates stained with old dark marks. Its stone-gray hide was thicker than the rest, lined with dark vein-like patterns that pulsed faintly beneath the surface.
One arm was larger than the other, swollen with muscle and old scar tissue, the claws worn and chipped from tearing through walls, doors, stone, and whatever else had tried to keep it out. Its jaw was broad enough to look capable of crushing stone, the teeth inside broken unevenly from use rather than weakness.
Unlike the others, it did not rush.
It stepped forward slowly.
The lesser Maulers lowered themselves or shifted aside as it entered the courtyard, their aggression bending around its presence like instinct recognizing command.
Liam and Asher stood still, both understanding at the same time.
This was the Alpha Mauler.
