ShadowBound: The Need For Power

Chapter 843: The Challenger

Chapter 843: The Challenger

At the center, Chris inclined his head with false courtesy. "I will go first, since I am the challenger here."

Sheila’s gaze remained steady. "Go ahead."

Her voice was polite, but the disgust beneath her calm was not entirely hidden. She saw through the act. That did not mean she would beat it, but at least she understood it.

Chris turned slightly, addressing the arena more than Sheila alone. "The Bastion Assessment will not be like our first-year battlefield simulation, which I believe the current first-years are likely to face in their own form as their practical assessment."

Several first-years reacted at that, suddenly listening harder for hints about their own future.

Chris continued, "That simulation had danger, yes. It had demons, coordination, battlefield pressure, and a Sync-class presence at the center of the objective. But it was still controlled in structure. Clearer. Shorter. Defined around neutralizing an enemy force within a bounded exercise. What we are facing now is different."

His voice grew firmer. "Fourteen days in another realm. Limited supplies. Damaged shelter. Injured students. Tired students. Scared students. Students who will disagree with the commander, question the structure, and perhaps refuse orders when their own comfort is threatened. Leading in a classroom, a training ground, or a controlled group test is not the same as leading a hundred students inside an entire realm."

A few students nodded despite themselves.

Chris’s first real point came cleanly. "Princess Sheila has proven she can gather support from those who already like her or want to trust her. I do not deny that. But she has not proven she can command people who disagree with her."

The arena went quieter.

Chris let that settle before continuing. "There is a difference between gathering agreement and commanding refusal. In Eldervale, a commander may need to decide who guards the walls after two sleepless nights. Who goes outside Veyrhold to scout dangerous areas. Who eats less when supplies tighten. Who is punished for disobeying orders. Who keeps fighting even when injured, afraid, or angry. Gentle words will not be enough then. Kindness will not be enough. Being liked will not keep a student at the wall when hunger, fear, and exhaustion tell him to abandon his post."

The reaction was serious now.

Some second-years murmured quietly, and not all of them sounded dismissive. A few glanced toward Sheila, then away, uncomfortable with the fact that the point had enough logic to touch something real. They liked Sheila. They trusted her more than Chris in many ways.

But liking someone and believing they could force structure through refusal were not the same thing. Chris had chosen the wound carefully. He was not calling Sheila weak outright. He was asking whether her strength had ever been tested against people who did not want to be moved.

The first-years whispered among themselves, wide-eyed, as if the academy had just revealed another layer of what leadership meant beyond ranks. Several third-years watched without speaking, their expressions more difficult to read. They understood this was no longer a simple display. It was a true leadership challenge now, and Chris had opened with a point that could not be waved away by calling him arrogant.
