Chapter 800: A Great Teacher (2)

Liam’s gaze remained on the diagram. "So instability is caused by imbalance."

"Yes." Ariana looked relieved that the word fit. "Exactly. The core can compress Myst safely as long as the channels can match the output pace. If the core gathers and tightens too much, but the channels lag behind, the compressed Myst pushes against the internal structure instead of moving cleanly into the spell. That creates strain, heat, pain, shaking, misfires, or even backlash depending on the affinity."

Liam considered that. "Then for fire magic, the backlash would usually show as overheating, channel burn, or uncontrolled ignition."

"Yes," Ariana said, pleased. "And for dark magic, I think it would be more like internal pressure distortion or shadow bleed, though dark magic is harder because the texts don’t have any explanation on it."

"They wouldn’t."

Ariana glanced at him briefly, catching the dry edge in his voice, but she did not linger on it. Instead, she turned back to the page and drew three small examples beneath the circles.

"This is normal flow," she said, drawing a clean arrow from core to channels to spell. "This is controlled compression." She drew a tighter arrow, denser but still smooth. "And this is unstable compression." The third arrow bulged in the middle, pressing unevenly against the ring.

"The threshold begins when the compressed Myst stops moving as one current and starts pressing outward unevenly. That’s why instructors keep talking about rhythm. It isn’t just poetic. Rhythm tells the body when to compress and when to release."

Liam asked, "Then is a larger core more dangerous?"

"Not automatically."

"Why?"

"Because a larger core only means greater potential capacity. It becomes dangerous if the channels, control, or spell structure cannot keep up. Someone with a large core and refined channels can compress safely at levels another person cannot. But someone with a large core and poor regulation might hurt themselves with even moderate compression." Ariana paused, then looked at him carefully.

"That’s why people who ascend too quickly can struggle. Their core capacity increases, but their habits don’t always adjust immediately. They try to use the same control rhythm as before, but their output has changed."

Liam’s eyes sharpened slightly.

Ariana noticed but did not ask.

"So if the core changes," Liam said, "the threshold changes with it."

"Yes. And the person has to relearn where safe compression ends."

"That explains why the same spell can feel different after growth."
