Chapter 790: Back To Class Sessions
Chapter 790: Back To Class Sessions
The last class of the day had a way of making even the strongest students feel as though the academy itself had tightened a hand around their throats.Tactical Espionage was not loud the way Knight Combat could be. It did not carry the heat, impact, or open violence of Fire Magic, nor the structured discipline of weapon drills where every bruise at least came from something a student could see. It was quieter than that. Worse in some ways.
The room Lady Seraphina Vale used that afternoon was neither a normal classroom nor a full training hall, but something unpleasantly between the two: a wide chamber with black stone floors, tiered desks pushed toward the walls, and a central open space marked by faint silver lines that formed circles, corridors, and blind spots across the floor.
Thin curtains of dark cloth hung between several pillars, creating artificial corners and shifting shadows. Along one wall, mirrors had been covered with black sheets, and along the other, practice blades, restraints, weighted cords, and small vials of harmless but bitter-smelling training toxins sat arranged with unsettling neatness.
The air carried the scent of chalk dust, cold metal, and the sharp residue of crushed herbs. It was not enough to be poisonous, but it was enough to make the students aware of their breathing, which was likely the point.
Most of the class stood in the center of the room, tired, irritated, and too cautious to show either openly. Some rubbed their wrists where Professor Veylan Kaine had made them practice breaking out of binds under pressure. Others avoided looking directly at Lady Seraphina, which was usually a mistake, because avoiding her attention somehow seemed to invite it more quickly.
A few students had small streaks of ink along their collars or necks, marks left from failed concealment drills where Seraphina had proven they could still be touched, tracked, manipulated, or "killed" without realizing it.
Liam stood near the back half of the group, his expression as flat as ever, though his sleeves were slightly disturbed and there was a shallow red mark along one side of his throat where a training cord had caught him earlier. It had not been enough to injure him.
That had not been the purpose.
Kaine had made that painfully clear when he had appeared behind Liam during the third exercise and dragged the cord across his neck with just enough pressure to remind him that awareness was not the same thing as survival.
Charlotte stood a short distance away from him, arms folded beneath her chest, one hip slightly angled as though the entire class bored her more than it bothered her. But even she had been quieter today.
Seraphina had dragged several uncomfortable truths out of the students during the lesson, not by asking directly, but by making them answer questions while distracted, tired, or trying to maintain a false expression.
