Ares was born to Zeus and Hera, like Hephaestus. When Ares was very young, he beat up Hephaestus and many of the young gods just to get his father's attention, who was busy showing off and trying to charm women.
Back then, Ares thought that his father would scold him just like ordinary human fathers did whenever their child did something wrong. But Zeus told him...
–You are my child, Ares. There’s no reason for me to scold you just for something like that.
Ares found it odd. Any ordinary father would scold himself. Of course, Zeus’ thinking would be correct if the children whom Ares hit were the ones who provoked him and started the quarrel. But Ares was the one who started it all. This meant that his father thought it was only natural that Ares used violence.
Then, Ares went to find his mother, Hera. He was sure that Hephaestus was among those whom he had hit earlier.

–Brother? That monster is a different breed from you. Don’t call that thing your brother.
Even his mother was different from ordinary mothers. In Ares’ ears, it was as if his father and mother were saying these things:
