Chapter 780. The Guests
Mauve stood outside with Jael as the physician and midwife arrived. She didn’t have to do this, and Jael had tried to stop her, but she wasn’t having it. When he saw he couldn’t convince her otherwise, he decided to join her to receive their guests.
They stood at the top of the stairs as the carriage slowly pulled up. The carriage rider was a vampire. Mauve recognized him, but she didn’t really know his name. As the carriage stopped, she took a step forward, and Jael followed her until they both got to the bottom of the stairs.
The door opened, and a young woman stepped out first. She wasn’t too young but younger than Mauve had expected for a midwife. The woman looked dazed and scared, and her eyes scanned the area before her gaze settled on Mauve, then lowered to her stomach. The physician stepped out next. He was visibly older, with white hair scattered across his head and stubble. He was also short and held a briefcase.
The man bowed while the woman curtsied, but neither of them took a step away from the carriage. Mauve couldn’t blame them. Not only were they in the vampire regions, but they were also in the Primus’s residence. It was bound to be scary.
She took a step forward, her hands wide open, and her growing stomach was in full view. Jael took a step with her, and she watched the midwife and physician visibly step back. She glanced at Jael, and he frowned, but he reluctantly nodded. She smiled and walked toward the carriage alone this time.
"Welcome," she said. "You’ll have to forgive me, but I didn’t ask my brother for your names beforehand. If you don’t mind?"
"O-of course, Princess. We don’t. I am Madeline, the midwife, and this is Ferguson, the physician."
"Thank you, Madeline and Ferguson, for making the journey here. I am sure it was quite hectic. Please come with me."
"Okay, Your Ladyship," they both said but then let out a fearful gasp.
