"Surely, that can’t be a bad wish?"
"No, it’s not." Mauve shook her head. She wasn’t crying anymore, and he wiped the remaining tears from her face. "But what if this is the way to end Palers for good? Won’t you consider it?"
She raised her head to look at Jael’s face, their eyes meeting, his hand still on her face. His movement froze, and Mauve was greeted with silence before he pulled his hand away to run it through his hair.
"I don’t know," he reluctantly admitted.
"Jael," Mauve called as she moved on top of him, mindful of her tummy. "I am not worried. I know you can keep me safe."
"That makes one of us," he said as she ventured closer.
"I am sure you can," she said as she rested on him.
"I would really like to believe that, Mauve, but everything keeps getting out of hand, and I don’t want to take any chances, especially not now." He placed his hand on her stomach, and she looked down.
"I know," she mumbled, slowly nodding her head. "But this is something that could change everything. We would be rid of Palers forever. Is it truly something you can’t consider?"
Jael sighed and rested his head against the back of hers. "I would need some time to think about it."
Mauve nodded immediately. This was progress. As long as she was no longer getting an adamant "no," they could work around it. "Take all the time you need. I won’t do anything you don’t want."
