Chapter 713. Jael’s Promises
"I was wondering," Mauve asked after some time of just lying on Jael in silence.
"What is it?" Jael asked as he slowly ran his fingers through her hair.
"What happened to the guard stationed in front of my room? Did you get rid of him so Seraphino would have easy access to me?" Mauve didn’t know why she suddenly needed to know, but it was something she had been curious about.
Jael winced at her accusation. "I wanted to see how far Seraphino would go, but I never intended to put you in such a dangerous position. And no, I didn’t get rid of the guard. He was stationed right outside your bedroom, but when I arrived, he wasn’t there. It wasn’t until almost dusk that he appeared."
Mauve jerked her head up at this. She couldn’t begin to fathom the excuse the guard would have for vanishing for that long, but it must have been genuine because he was back at his post by the time she left for the first meal. "What did he say happened?"
"He said he tried to stop Seraphino but suddenly woke up in a dark room. He had a feeling someone must have hit him from behind, and the only proof he had was the dried blood at the back of his head. The injury was already long healed."
"Oh," Mauve said and placed her head back on his chest.
"I should have foreseen this. It was just one guard; Seraphino would have easily overpowered him."
"It sounds like he had help. Did you sense anyone when you arrived?" Mauve asked.
