Within an hour, Beatrice arrived.
As August's sole subordinate, Beatrice owed him everything, including her current life of luxury, courtesy of the gold bars he had generously provided her. Even if he summoned her in the dead of night and made her cross half the city, she wouldn't hesitate to come running.
Natsuki Minamiya, suspicious of whatever antics August might be up to at such an hour, decided to stay up as well. Being merely a magical construct of her true self, she didn't need rest anyway.
"Master," Beatrice greeted respectfully upon arrival. However, her composure faltered when she saw August and Natsuki living under the same roof.
"I called you here for one reason," August said, cutting to the chase.
"Please, speak," Beatrice replied.
"I want to know how to summon a familiar and how to forge a pact with one."
Beatrice froze, momentarily wondering if she'd misheard him. "Summon a familiar? Form a pact?"
But when she met August's serious gaze, she realized he wasn't joking.
"Master, summoning a familiar isn't difficult, but... are you certain you want to form a pact with one? Familiars are ferocious beasts that constantly drain their master's life force. Since you aren't a vampire, I'm afraid—"
"It doesn't matter. Just tell me how."
