Chapter 186: A Crime He Did Not Commit
Lyse walked into her apartment, exhausted and emotionally drained. The visit to Mr. Black’s office had left her feeling more confused and worried than ever. The evidence against Levi was mounting, and his refusal to explain himself was only making things worse. She didn’t know what to believe anymore. Doubt gnawed at her, whispering insidious questions in her ear.
She closed the door behind her, sighing deeply. She just wanted to be alone, to process everything that had happened. But as she turned to go to her bedroom, she felt that someone was in the house. The curtains were open and she was sure that she had not touched them before leaving.
A wave of terror washed over her as she wondered who could be in the apartment, and what they wanted. Lyse was not willing to stay around and find out, so she started to back out of the apartment.
Then Laurie stepped out of the guest room and Lyse almost fainted from the fright of her sudden appearance.
"Oh gosh! Laurie, you scared me." Lyse said as she put a hand on her chest and felt her heart racing.
She was very surprised. She had not seen Laurie in months. Not since...well, not since the soirée that was held in honor of hers and Levi’s marriage. She was the last person she expected to see.
"What are you doing here?" Lyse asked, her voice filled with surprise.
Laurie stood up, her expression a mixture of anxiety and determination. "Lyse," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "We need to talk. It’s about Levi."
Lyse’s heart sank. "I know it’s about Levi," she said. "Everyone is talking about it."
