Chapter 78: Severe Allergic Reaction
Levi, sensing her distress, quickly stood up, his concern evident as he approached her. "Lyse, what happened?" he asked, his voice filled with worry.
She shook her head, seemingly unaware of her surroundings. Levi pulled her into his arms and protected her from the probing eyes of the people ar the table.
"I think we should be leaving right now." He announced, "My wife is not feeling fine."
With that, he swept her off her feet and carried her out of the dining room. Jeff got to his feet and hurriedly followed them out.
"I am so sorry, Levi, Lyse," he apologized, his face etched with guilt. "Do you want me to go with you? Are you going to take her to the hospital?"
Levi did not want to speak with Jeff because he felt like his apology was hollow, that he had played a part in Lyse’s misery. He regretted insisting that they come for the dinner because now that he had seen Lyse with her family, he wanted to keep them as far away from her as possible.
"You don’t have to come with us," Levi said, his tone short and sarcastic. "It is not your fault."
Jeff nodded, his expression somber. "I still feel so guilty, I hoped that we would have a good time."
As he carefully put her in the car, Levi realized that Lyse’s face had turned a sickly shade of pale, her eyes beginning to water. A rash was spreading across her skin, and she started to wheeze. His heart pounded as he recognized the signs of what could be a severe allergic reaction. Panic surged through him as he realized the danger she was in.
A flustered Jeff stood in the doorway, watching in disbelief as the car disappeared into the dark night. The realization of the gravity of the situation hit him, and a wave of fear washed over him. From the brief interaction, it was clear to see that Levi cared about Lyse. He would not be pleased at how she had been treated and that meant trouble for him.
He pivoted back into the house, his strides long and purposeful as he headed to the dining room.
