Chapter 58: So Close
"Well, well, well," he sneered. "Looks like someone is trying to make a break for it."
Lyse’s heart sank and she closed her eyes. She had been so close. "You won’t get away with this, Max," she said, her voice defiant. "The police will find you, my husband is not going to take it easy on you."
Max laughed, a cold, mirthless sound. "The police? They are not going to find anything. I am too smart for them."
He took a step in her direction and she took a step back, trying to keep as much distance between them as she could. "As for your husband... he does not care about you." When Lyse shook her head, he nodded with a grin. "Yes. Do you know that there has been no report on your disappearance? Not even a single word."
A chill pervaded Lyse. If no one was looking for her then she was in trouble. She thought bitterly about how Levi had hounded her until she accepted to be his wife and now he had abandoned her.
Max took more steps, approaching her, his eyes filled with malice. "But you, my dear, you are a different story. You are going to pay for your defiance. I would have been nice to you but you tried to escape."
He leaned in, his breath hot and fetid and Lyse tried to move away but she was backed up against the wall. "You are a feisty one, aren’t you? But don’t you worry, I like that. And I have got plenty more tricks up my sleeve."
With a swift movement, he produced a syringe. Fear gripped Lyse as she realized what he was about to do. She struggled against him, but it was futile. Max injected the sedative, and her vision blurred. She felt her body growing heavy, her consciousness slipping away.
When she awoke, she was disoriented, her head pounding and her mouth dry. She found herself confined to a small, cramped space, the darkness suffocating. The smell of dust and decay filled the air, and she could hear the faint rumble of a car engine. She was trapped in the trunk of a car.
