Chapter 388: Candied Fruits
In the end, Mineah’s wants won out as she and Nikolai found themselves making their way through the nearby public market to buy the fabled sweets that she was badly craving. It took a bit of convincing to make her husband go with her plan, but it would all be worth it in the end, she was sure.
That was, so long as their disguises lasted.
"I still think I couldn’t just make something for you in the cabin," Nikolai sighed in as they both walked through the streets with their flimsy disguises. "We didn’t have to go out here in the middle of the night just for a bit of sweets."
"But where’s the fun in that?" she pouted. "Besides, it’s much better for us to see the sights around us, and that’s on top of supporting the local business here."
Indeed, it was pretty much a spur of the moment for them to be out there in the first place. They didn’t even have proper disguises until a few minutes ago, and even then they were very much a patchwork job that would barely hold together if it went under proper scrutiny. Truly, if it wasn’t for Mineah’s constant goading and promises of a good time if her requests were heeded, then Nikolai would’ve probably just insisted that they had food at home and called it an evening. Unfortunately for him, she would not be denied her weird sugary cravings in the middle of the night.
"This is very much unlike you, isn’t it," Nikolai pointed out with a soft chuckle, having resigned himself to their current task. "I know you like your sweets, but you wouldn’t be this desperate to have them in the middle of the night."
"I know, but I just feel like it," she shrugged. "It’s just... I feel like having something sweet in me would make things better. And not just any kind of sweets too..."
She frowned as she focused on her current cravings. It was weird, but she really wanted something esoteric like candied grapes on a bamboo skewer or something similar. It was far out of her norm of just going for pastries and sweet cakes, but it wasn’t too far that it was suspicious. Yes, perhaps this was just a spur of the moment craving without too much health indications for it.
"Is that so? What kind of sweets do you want then?" her husband curiously asked. "I’m pretty sure all of the nearby bakeries would be closed at this hour. Maybe there are a few open stalls still open, but we’re not exactly in a big city where some establishments can remain open through the night."
"There’s still a few taverns and bars open if that’s the case," she quickly reasoned. "We can always just request something from them for more pay."
"If that’s the case, then why are we even here?" Nikolai scoffed. "I can always just cook it for you if you want."
"Eh, don’t question it too much," she defended herself with another pout, her arms quickly wrapping themselves around his arm. "Just think of this as a little date. I’m sure that’s what this is already anyway."
