The Crown's Seduction

Chapter 373: Clues

Laura sighed as she sat alone in her office in the middle of the night. Nursing a drink in her hand, she couldn’t help but feel like she was getting softer these days with how she was currently feeling. Somehow, she felt disappointed that she was currently drinking by herself. That she was just casually doing nothing except wait for someone to come and accompany her somehow.

Of course, that certain someone was something that Laura didn’t like to admit. But it would be nice not to drink alone.

"This is kind of sad," she chuckled to herself as she took a sip of her drink. "What has the world come to..."

Indeed, things just weren’t adding up recently no matter how much she tried to look at things from a different perspective. Starting from the plague, all the way to King Nikolai’s supposed death, there were simply too many variables she had to keep track of. She had her own men and women out there conducting investigations for her, of course, but that was precisely the problem: she was practically working on her own instead of being supported by the higher ups.

And now, King Raul who had just recently been coronated as the new king was suddenly charged and proven with treason. It just didn’t make any sense whatsoever. Anybody in their right mind would immediately be able to tell that there was something wrong with all of the evidence against Raul just magically showing up without any valid source or methodology. And the way they all came to her without even so much as proper documentation beyond the bare minimum screamed that there was something more to what was happening. In fact, she would’ve personally handled that case herself if it weren’t for the queen stopping her from doing so.

"I don’t know why Her Majesty wanted me off the case, but then again..." she grumbled to herself before taking another sip of her drink. "Ugh... I hate that it still makes sense..."

Unfortunately, it truly did make sense for her to not be the one handling the case regarding Raul’s supposed treason. She was known to be close to Queen Mineah, which meant that anything she might do to try and clear his name, or even just doing her job, would immediately draw scrutiny from some of the more annoying court officials. She was also friends with the man’s wife, Niran, which only added to her supposed bias should she handle the said case.

"Bias..." she clicked her tongue at the term. "I’m not that improper at my job..."

Indeed. Unless Queen Mineah herself told her to try and cheat the system, she would do her job as best as she could. It didn’t matter to her if her friends and family would somehow get into her sights. So long as she did things properly, then she was fine with whatever happened to them. It also helped that she was confident in her friends’ abilities to actually remain clean of evidence. In fact, if she ever saw herself handling a case of theirs, she’d probably laugh at them for being caught in the first place.

Laura chuckled at such a thought as she took another sip of her wine. Truly, if she was getting bored enough to think about hypotheticals, then she should probably just try and sleep just to get things over with. She still had a lot of work tomorrow, and it wouldn’t do for her to show up hungover.
