Mineah felt like her heart just leaped out of her chest with that revelation. Nikolai hadn’t mentioned that before at all. He only told her that Vulcan killed his father and that he witnessed how his father suffered before turning into ash, not that... that almost happened.
She bit her inner lip as she watched Nikolai glare at the flying dragon far away from them. The burning desire to kill it was very visible in the flaming wildfire in his amber orbs. She could feel his body trembling against hers. That was how much he was trying to control himself from attacking the dragon.
She inwardly hissed through her teeth. If only that dragon wasn’t holding Ezekiel’s body captive... She would’ve probably even given him her free reign to finish off Vulcan and finally take away the burden and fury still within her husband.
Guilty, she cupped his face and rested her forehead on his as she whispered, "I’m sorry if I’m holding you back, Lai. I..."
"Why?" Nikolai suddenly asked. "Why are you holding me back? Why do I have this feeling that you’re protecting Vulcan?"
Mineah’s face paled. With Nikolai still staring intensely into her eyes, she did her best to defend herself. "I-I’m n-not p-protecting V-Vulcan, Lai," she stuttered. "But w-what if..."
She found her words trailing off as she contemplated what she was about to say. There could be no harm in mentioning what exactly was going on by making it look like it was just a hypothetical situation. That way, she could also see how Nikolai would react to the potential news.
Her mind made up, she cupped his face once more and met his intense gaze. "What if your suspicion is right, Nikolai? What if that dragon had already merged with my brother Ezekiel? And you killed it?" she asked with a whisper. "That’s why I want you to wait till we find my brother, Nikolai..."
"But that’s absurd! My father is the most powerful vampire and even he wasn’t able to fight Vulcan’s soul!" Nikolai reasoned. "And even if Vulcan is using your brother’s body, then there’s no guarantee that it’s still his body! Vulcan reigns over any living thing it fuses to."
