Chapter 144: Starting the Evacuation
While it probably hadn't taken that long, Jonas couldn't help but feel moving through these corridors was taking longer than it really should. Not only that, but he was starting to smell smoke. It could be a good thing or a bad thing. Until he could see the source he wouldn't be able to say for sure.
Of course it could be neither good nor bad, just that he was smelling something smoking. He'd never been able to differentiate the different smells from different smokes, like he'd known a few people who could. Though, one thing he was sure of was that whoever was behind the assassination plan had started torching the building.
As he felt like he was getting closer, he heard sounds. At first it was too distant to make anything out, other than general noises, but as he got closer, he could tell a fight was going on. He could only hope that it was between someone trying to escape the party rather than a rescuer trying to break through the would-be assassins.
Following the sound of combat, Jonas quickly found himself watching Kim fight three men. While he wanted to jump in to help, it was clear Kim had them outmatched, as she was wielding a sword while the other three had daggers at best. Aside from the fact that he was still at least fifty feet away and the fact he knew that Kim wouldn't be happy with him if he decided to help her out when she had the situation under control.
As Jonas watched the fight while he approached, he couldn't help but think that all the strength in the world wouldn't help you if you couldn't reach your opponent to attack but they could reach you. The three men were on the defensive and doing their best to block Kim's sword swings, but their mobility was hindered by the hallway.
Jonas watched as Kim shifted her tactic from attacking the men themselves and instead started working on attacking their arms. While it would take a little longer to eliminate the threat that they posed, limiting their ability to block Kim's sword would help even more.
By the time he reached Kim, she'd dispatched the three men, their bodies laying on the floor. Jonas couldn't help but think that they'd need to move them or when the people who attended the party might trip over them as they came out this way. He couldn't help but assume that this was the only way out from the party, since Kim was there.
As he approached, Kim turned to face him, her sword at the ready. At first Jonas was confused then realized she probably was reacting to the sound and that she couldn't see because it was so dark in the corridor while he could see clearly because of his abilities.
"Kim, it's me," he said calmly.
