Alice Kuonji looked up from the magical tome she was reading on the sofa.
Before her stood a figure with a face as pale as flour.
Bloodshot azure eyes, bulging veins—an aura of darkness, as if she’d just crawled out of hell.
Thwack—!
The book fell to the floor.
For the first time, a look of terror appeared on Alice’s usually impassive face. She instinctively recoiled, her body sinking deep into the soft sofa. "W-what... happened to you, Aoko?" she stammered.
"...Not dead yet." Aoko, her back hunched, her voice a hoarse whisper, shuffled towards the sofa opposite Alice and, with a soft thud, collapsed onto it, her slender body sinking into the cushions.
"Weren’t you going to deal with the witness this morning? What happened?" Alice asked, her voice a tentative whisper as she patted her chest, which was fluttering like a hummingbird’s wings.
She’d been living with Aoko for nearly two years, and this was the first time she’d ever seen her look so terrifying. Compared to a ghost, besides being a living creature, there was no difference.
