Chapter 21 Hit by a Meteorite
The Lucia people did not save the Blue Planet; the interception mission failed, or rather, only partially succeeded.
As predicted, the nuclear bomb shattered one of the three meteors. Although it hit the other two, they weren’t shattered, only polished. Now these two meteors are falling toward the Pacific Ocean.
According to the astronomers’ estimates, their impact points will be between Australia and Hawaii.
But all this no longer concerns Chen Xin. No matter where the meteors land, two meteors with a diameter of five kilometers will be enough to trigger a global catastrophe, stirring up dust clouds that obscure the sky and plunging the entire world into a long, cold night.
Now all Chen Xin can do is take one last look at this sunlit world and then quickly retreat into his shelter.
Because for the next several decades, or even a hundred years, there won’t be any sunlight on the surface. This could very well be the last time Chen Xin sees the sun in his life.
At this moment, in the sky, aside from the sun, there are two enormous fireballs streaking across the sky at tremendous speed, heading eastward.
Along the trajectory of these two large fireballs, there are also small bright spots like Mars occasionally shooting out, dragging long tails across the sky.
Chen Xin knows that these are the two meteors about to strike the Blue Planet, and those scattered sparks are merely fragments peeled off the meteors due to atmospheric friction.
With the landing of these two meteors, the Blue Planet will face yet another mass extinction, just like the fifth mass extinction, the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event 65 million years ago, where over 80% of life on the Blue Planet will perish, and the entire ecosystem will completely collapse.
