The weather surprised everyone on the morning of the funeral. Sudden rain visited the empire as if it had come to bid the Empress farewell. It started soaking the earth as early as 4:00 a.m, and showed no signs of stopping as those that would witness the final journey of the Empress made their way to the Buddhist temple which sat atop a hill.
The Empress’s body, dressed in royal white robes was placed in a glass casket under Bodhi trees, besides a stream of water. A string of wooden beads had been placed in her hands. Other than that, she was not to be buried with any jewelry.
The dignitaries and nobles whose motorcades lined up the road up the mountain like winding serpents stood in the open, under umbrellas. They were silent, with somber expressions on their faces. Those without coats shivered but refused to show signs of being affected by the cold.
