Chapter 139: High & Haughty
When the door to Researcher Yang’s lab finally opened, two assistants appeared. The first was a man, and the second was a woman. Neither of them looked particularly pleased at how late Anji was.
"Do you know what time it is?" snapped the woman with arms folded in front of her chest, glaring at Anji, who had her head bowed immediately.
Before Anji could explain her situation or apologise, the man clicked his tongue, emphasising their annoyance. However, he did not scold Anji. Instead, pulled the woman towards him and stared at the small child.
"You know why you’re here, right?" he asked Anji.
It was likely a rhetorical question because Anji was cut off before she could reply. However, after lifting her head, the state of the inner court shocked her.
Pointing at the utter mess that was Researcher Yang’s quarters, the man smirked at Anji.
"Even if you were young and late, surely you can’t be stupid seeing how you made it into this sect. For your tardiness, you will be punished. Researcher Yang is busy today and will not see you, but that does not mean you can slack off. Finish cleaning the lab and tidying the inner court before evening, or you will face my wrath. We have other important matters to attend to, so you had better not slack off."
Confused by the change in instructions, Anji wanted to clarify the misunderstanding, but the two assistants had already left the compound arm-in-arm flirting as they did. Anything she wanted to say would have fallen on deaf ears either way. The only silver lining was how Anji was left alone to do whatever she wanted in Researcher Yang’s lab.
Unlike the irresponsible couple that Anji wished would never have children, the young girl decided to have a look around first. Compared to the words of a mere senior researcher, she would rather trust the promises of the researchers who interviewed her yesterday. They only requested one chore done per day. Besides, Researcher Yang promised to be back to spend some time teaching her something when the chore was done.
Nobody said she had to do chores by hand. Moreover, since the assistants did not identify the chore she had to do, Anji had options to choose.
Thankfully, the research lab was full of materials that Anji could use to create her machines. The easiest chore had to be laundry because that was what she managed to do last night. However, the lack of heating stones made drying the clothes a tad more difficult. She did not have a heating chamber, but thankfully, she could just drape the wet clothes over chairs that she pulled outside. They should be dry by now with such strong sun. She would collect them in the evening.
