Chapter 1119: Foolproof Plan 7
He Teng took the train from the county town to a city with an airport, then went straight back to the military base. At the base, except for a few people in the know, everyone thought He Teng had been out on a secret mission. When they saw him return, they all said he should host a celebration.
However, seeing that He Teng’s wife hadn’t been back to the base for so long and didn’t come back with him this time, coupled with all the things happening in the capital — like how his wife turned out to be the biological daughter of Commander Gu — these bits of news became a hot topic of gossip in the base.
"Since that little rascal is back, tell him to get his ass over to my office, pronto!" The head commander, upon hearing He Teng had returned, immediately had someone pass the word for He Teng to come see him.
When He Teng arrived at the commander’s office, Political Commissar Chen Zheng was there too. As soon as He Teng walked through the door, the commander grabbed a book from his desk and hurled it at him, trembling with rage.
"Reporting to the commander! He Teng reporting back!" He Teng dodged the book with quick reflexes, picked it up, and handed it back to the commander. Then, standing at attention with legs together, he saluted, exuding energy with every word he spoke.
The commander looked at He Teng with a mixture of frustration and disappointment. "Where’s your wife? I heard she didn’t come back with you."
"Of course, she’s stashed somewhere super safe!" He Teng grinned widely. "Guarantee no one will find her!"
"Impressive! You’ve hidden your wife better than gold!" The commander teased He Teng, though he was still huffing and puffing in mock anger. Yet his expression was laced with amusement—he understood why He Teng was being so cautious. These days, many were poking around about He Zhilan’s whereabouts. With He Teng suddenly back at the base, even though the official story was that he had completed his mission, the commander was prepared for people to swarm the base, trying to sniff out where He Teng had been.
That said, the commander wasn’t too worried about leaks, mainly because even he didn’t know where He Teng had gone. If people wanted to investigate, they’d have nowhere to start.
