Even though he had made a good deal of money from the brick factory, Chen Cui’s husband didn’t have an ounce of the airs of a wealthy man. "My parents were sent down to a village in the South, which happened to be his hometown, and it was there that I met him," Chen Cui said casually, sharing her story of being the daughter of intellectuals, following her parents to the countryside, and then meeting a poor boy who had only finished elementary school in the village, getting to know him, falling in love, and eventually marrying him.
Although Chen Cui did not explicitly say it, everyone understood that there must have been many hardships along the way; after all, the couple came from very different family backgrounds before finally coming together. It surely wasn’t easy.
No wonder Chen Cui’s husband was so doting towards her.
