When Lan Li brought the car around, she got directly into the back seat. Through the lowered window, she watched He Teng standing outside, listening to him carefully instructing Lan Li to take good care of her, arranging her accommodation for the night. Afterwards, they looked at each other.
"Don’t come next week, I won’t come to pick you up, let alone meet you like this today. Just call me if you need anything," He Teng told Zhilan, then turned his back and went back to his troop.
Lan Li glanced at Zhilan in the back seat and without a word, drove away.
Earlier, he had watched from afar as two small figures took their leave. He couldn’t hear their conversation, but it looked like Zhilan had kissed He Teng, who didn’t push her away.
He had thought He Teng and Zhilan had reconciled, but out of nowhere He Teng had called him to take Zhilan away, and once again, forbidden Zhilan from seeking him out at the troop.
Zhilan too was puzzled as to why He Teng had made this sudden decision, to shut her out of his life completely, and likewise, remove himself from her world.
Nonetheless, Zhilan vowed she wouldn’t withdraw so easily.
Maybe it was karma!
In the past twelve years, she distressed the He Family, but now, He Teng was returning the favor; she couldn’t let go, therefore, she had no other choice but to endure.
Looking at Lan Li driving ahead, she thought of Ding Jinshi, who loved him dearly, yet ended up marrying a man she didn’t love. She, Zhilan, would never follow in Ding Jinshi’s steps.
"Lan Li, did you know Ding Jinshi is pregnant?" Zhilan suddenly asked, her tone sarcastic, "She’s about to become a mother, this is so sudden."
The car jolted noticeably before quickly steadying and continuing its journey.
