He Zhilan looked in the direction Chen Yun pointed and saw a wounded woman tightly holding a child, who was probably only eight years old, standing hunched in a corner.
"Have they been standing like this since the incident?" asked He Zhilan.
"Yes! They haven’t even ventured out for a peek," Chen Yun nodded, somewhat irritated, "No one, old or young, will utter a word when spoken to, as if we were going to eat them."
"Can you let your people step out for a while? I would like to try to talk to them," He Zhilan thought for a moment and said, "As a woman alone, they should be less guarded against me, maybe I can get them to talk."
Chen Yun hesitated, but agreed with He Zhilan’s logic. He nodded his head, ordered his staff to retreat, "We will all be outside, if anything happens, just shout loudly, and we’ll rush in."
"A woman and a child, what danger could I be in?" He Zhilan laughed, and then she went in by herself.
As everyone expected, when all the people in the room left, the mother and son seemed to be less tense. However, when He Zhilan entered, their gaze was tightly locked on her.
"Sister, how did you get the wounds on your face? Does it hurt? Have you treated them?" He Zhilan’s voice was very gentle, her face showed sincere concern. "Don’t be afraid, sister, the policemen outside are all good people."
When questioned by He Zhilan, the woman raised her hand to touch the wound on her face, remained silent, and then tightened her grip on her child’s hand.
Seeing this, He Zhilan knew that the woman was highly alert, so she shifted her attention to the child who was also wounded.
She bent down and gently smiled at the child. "LIttle friend, come to me. How old are you this year? What grade are you in?"
The little boy’s deep black eyes paused on He Zhilan’s face, then he looked up at his mother, bowed his head, and did not speak.
