When Alanis arrived back home with his wife, Charlotte was already waiting. She had heard the commotion, the maids and butler rushing toward the entrance, whispering urgently among themselves about the return of their boss and madam. She had been waiting for their arrival all night, her heart heavy with worry.

Charlotte understood that couples argued and fought a lot, but whatever had happened between Alanis and Harlow was on another level. It made her question everything. Had she truly agreed to this marriage? Had she forced Alanis into it? Or worse, had Harlow’s parents pressured her into marrying her grandson?

Right now, more than ever, Charlotte hated that she couldn’t remember anything from before. There had to be a reason why these two ended up together. She knew she needed to do something about them before they killed themselves soon.

As soon as Harlow stepped out of the car, she didn’t hesitate. She walked straight to Charlotte, wrapping her arms around the older woman. The small peck she placed on Charlotte’s cheek was enough to melt her heart, momentarily making her forget all her worries.

"Don’t ever break my heart like that again, Harlow," Charlotte chided, rubbing her chest as if soothing an ache. "I almost had a heart attack yesterday."

Harlow nodded sincerely. "I will never do that again, Grandma. I promise."

She never meant to hurt Charlotte. She had been so caught up in Alanis’s dare that she hadn’t realized how much her actions had affected the people who cared about her.

"That’s good," Charlotte said, but her sharp eyes quickly turned to Alanis, her expression shifting into a glare.
